I was surfing around the other day and ended up playing with the babynamegenie. Hated almost all the genie's suggestions LOL. BUT, a question in the letter section got me thinking. The person asked about more modern two part first names - their mom grew up with Mary Jane and the like. The genie suggested Alexa Grace and Zoe Claire. What do you think and what are some other suggestions for two as one names?

I think names with Anne or Anna work very well, but maybe that's just because what I'm used to here. Things like Anna Sophie, Anne Marie and Anna Rose. They're nice, in my opinion.

OMG...if I'm having a girl, she's going to be Lily Grace because I think it's abso-freaking-lutely adorable. I feel so lame for doing a two as one name but I love it so much *squee* plus I like it since Lily is so popular...Grace just evens that out.
I went to school with a Mary Beth and thought that was adorable as well. It really fit her because the name sounded so sweet and she was a sweetheart.

One of my best friends is a Mary Beth, and I had a coach named Mary Beth as well! It's adorable on certain people, I think. My friend Mary Beth is adorable and sweet and it fits her to a tee, but Coach Mary Beth was rather intimidating and it seemed out of place on her.

That came out wrong...I know they're both popular names but how many other Lily's in the class do you think will go by Lily Grace? That's what I meant heh

My sister's first name is Mary Catherine and my three-year-old cousin's first name is Mary Alice. I think it's cute, but also a bit inconvenient on forms and such. I've only ever really heard it work with Mary Somethings though... but that might be the Catholic influence (we are all very Irish Catholic).

I like double first names, both conventional and unconventional. I don't like either Alexa Grace or Zoe Claire, though. The second names are both really pretty, but the first names not so much. My favorite double first names are:

Mary Olwen
Margaret Mary
Nora Jane
Ella May
Molly Kate
Anne Regine

it's very easy for "double barrel" names to sound buck-toothed and hokey. Ellie Mae, anyone? But I've run into a few that I like-- Maggie Belle, Laura Beth. You have to pay a LOT of attention to "flow" to make a name like that work. I don't think Alexa Grace works as a double name because it's too hard to get that GR and S-sound so soon after the harsh X. Something like Alexa May would work better, phonetically speaking, or Anna Grace. Zoe Claire is easier, but still has a lot of consonants mushed together.

I know an Anna Grace and I really like it on her.
For some reason, though, double-barreled first names always give me the impression of a person being very religious ad well as very conservative (speaking in terms of how they dress/look/behave). That's not a bad thing, it's just a very specific thing (at least in my mind!).

I know a Maryclare, a Maryellen, and my friend gave birth to a Serenity-Lee a couple months ago (who she calls Tylee for short).

I'm not very good at double name combos, since more than one middle name is odd to me and a double name (plus middle) is like having more than one middle name. Or something. Basically I just can't come up with more than 2 name combos.

One thing with Zoe Claire is that if you say it too fast, it comes out sounding like "Zo eclair"--it's a problem for any name that has Claire as a middle and an -ee sound at the end of the first name.

I do like the Mary ones... Mary Catherine, Mary Alice... but I agree that they do sound a little more religious.

I don't know... depends on the name...

I really like the way Maria Milagros sounds in Spanish...

Mary Kate? Mary Alice is nice too but yeah I loathe any ____ Mae or May names. They make me think of trailer trash =S not even entirely sure why.

I used to love names like this! I still do, to a certain extent. I think Mary Beth is adorable, and I absolutely love it. Mary Jane, too -- too bad for the marijuana connection.

I remember reading a book when I was younger about two sisters who get stuck in a library overnight, and either one or both of the girls had double names like that. I remember falling in love with their names and thinking of other names I could mix and match with them.

Ah, just googled the book, and their names were Mary Rose and Jo-Beth. :) I think short names with one or two syllables work well for names like that.

I think Ann works really well as a second name. Like, Lucy Ann! Or, in Spanish, Ana Lucia!

It could work if you go "modern" by going super classic, maybe, like Mabel Ann (plus it's cute like Mary Ann but not as Gilligan's-Island-y). I agree that GR is bad after X. Maybe Alexa could go with something softer?

Maybe Zoe Grace? To avoid the eclair problem.
