Which of the two English pronounciations of Vera do you prefer? Which do you think is more common in America?

VEER-ə or VER-ə

ETA: Well, I'm highly disappointed, but thanks for everyone's input. I guess there won't be any little Vera in my future. :(

I've only ever heard VER-a and would say it that way. VEER-a doesn't make sense to me, honestly.

It doesn't make sense to me either, but apparently we are outnumbered. :/

I just don't understand where the long e sound is coming from! If it was spelled Veera that'd be one thing... but I just don't see how there's a long E sound in Vera.
