[identity profile] bree019.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Is anyone afraid to use a name because of the awful nicknames that come with it? I recently posted one of our (FI and my) favorite boy names, Henry, and received good feedback. Nicknames must be considered, however.

Harry is okay, but...eh. And Hank? God.

Any cute nicknames for Henry? Oh, and feel free to share your names (with not-so-wonderful nicknames) as well.

;D

Haha, I for one would never call a little boy "Hank", so don't worry about it...it seems really outdated to me.

I don't like Jim, but I sorta like James (I'd never use it as a fn, though, so it's not an issue). Although that's not really an "awful" nickname, just NMS.

I love Henry, though :).

yeah, i think Jim's a really gross nickname. just makes me think of hicks.

but James is sooo nice and elegant, i think! ugh. =\

Ha, it makes me think of my uncle who is DEFINITELY a hick ;)

James would be a mn for me, but that's it. I don't like it as much for a first name (too plain).

My brother's name is James, and he has never been called Jim. Only a few relatives wanted to call him Jim but my mum didn't let them. He's now 16 and nobody seems to have called him Jim (maybe they're all scared of my mum)

I'd do jamie for james. I like jamie on a boy but not so much on a girl.

I think of Harry as more of a nickname for Harold.

I think Hank is kind of cute! You could always do Ren.

I agree, Harry is not a nickname for Henry.

And I don't like nicknames in general. Why can't people just be called by their actual names.

I really doubt it would occur to anyone to call someone named Henry by either Harry or Hank. Henry doesn't need a nn.

Why not just call him Henry? I doubt other people will start calling him Harry or Hank unless you do, honestly.

Why ruin such a great name as henry with a nickname? just call him henry.

if people are going to use a nickname, they'd probably go with harry...if harry potter is still popular then (who are we kidding, harry p will always be around :o)

My friends grade 6 sex ed teacher was anmed Harisson Dick. He informed htem he went by Harry. His parents must have been in a bad mood when they were naming him. Sorry it doesnt really answer your question, your post reminded me of him though.

i personally don't think henry needs a nickname. and as long as you don't call him harry or hank then i don't think it'll catch on, ya know?

ooh, i love hank! still, i don't think people jump into nicknames with henry. harry and hank don't seem to be placed in that context any more--people usually seem to be using nicknames that are shorter versions of a name; i.e., if your name is christopher, people are going to call you chris.

i like the name hank, think its really cute for a little boy.

perhaps im biased? i know the cutest little boy and his full name (not a nickname for anything) is hank.

Well, Shakespeare's Prince Henry is called Hal, but I don't know that that's any better.

I don't know any nicknames for Henry, and had never thought of Harry or Hank being related to Henry.

I really like the name Joseph, but the nickname Joe makes me think of a total bogan, perhaps a dusty old builder with his bum crack showing over the top of his torn, faded work pants. Not that I wouldn't love my son if he turned out like that :p but, it's not an image that appeals to me.

Prince Harry is really a Henry. I like Henry by itself... we call my friend 'henners' but that's because everyone seems to have nicknames in my friendship group, and if their name is too short to nickname (Tom, Jack..etc) then we seem to have made a nickname out of their surname, it's awfully strange now i think about it! it just sort of happened...
I'm Sofaz btw..

Oh, and although i love Anastasia i would never use it because i detest Stacy. It's really common & trailer trashy..
