has anyone heard the name josiane?

we are madly in love with josie but want a longer version. we have had various small issues with the other possibilities (josephine and josette) so are just kind of still searching. then we stumbled on this.

we saw it on a dvd at the video store yesterday and we both kind of love it, but are unsure what the correct pronunciation is. i am assuming its french, and did not find it on babynames.com

thanks!

ETA: what do you think of it?

ETA: thanks everyone for all the suggestions but i was really just trying to find out how to pronounce it. my husband and i long ago ran the gamut of JO- names, every single one you guys listed here crossed our paths, and the only two we like are josephine and josette, as i stated in the post. this one caught our eye the other day and we both seemed to like it, but we wanted to find the correct pronunciation before deciding for certain. thanks to anyone that can help with what the proper pronunciation is!

Someone in my high school was named Josienne. I think a similar pronunciation?
It was pronounced jo-zee-en. though no so much jo-see-anne.
I dont love it or hate it.

Weird. The only Josie name that really sounds good to me is Josephine or Josephina.

It sounds kind of made up but it's not that bad.

I think it looks weird and sounds ugly (both jo-zee-en and jo-see-anne), sorry. :(
I think the only name I like with this nickname is Josephine.

I've never heard it used, it looks odd to me. I like the idea of Josie Ann(e) or something.
Josephine is a pretty name that you could use Josie as a nickname. I looked it up and Josette and Josina are also names that can be used for Josie as a nickname, if you like either of those.

Another question related to your original question:

Is Josie typically pronounced like Jo-zee or Jo-see? I usually hear Jo-zee but it doesn't make sense with Josephine since that name uses the s sound.

In French Josephine has a Z sound.

I think it has a beautiful sound in French, but not so much in English. It's another diminuative of Josephine, so I guess it depends on whether you want to use a diminuative for another diminuative. http://www.behindthename.com/name/josiane

Definitely, and I commend you for wanting to find a full name to use. It bothers me when people are named obvious nicknames! And it's annoying for them too because people will all assume that it's a nickname. But of course you've thought of all that. :)

My boyfriend's sister's name is Jocelyn and they call her Josie sometimes. Maybe it's not the "correct" nickname for the name, but it fits her.

I've never seen it before, and I think it looks really ugly, honestly. And anything 'Jos' is just really unattractive sounding to me, so I really don't care for this.

I never really thought about it, but there aren't many options to have Josie as a nickname. That's too bad.

I like it, but what about Jocelyn? I've been considering that one and Josie cooooould be a nickname for it.

Painfully common where I come from, one of those -ane names that just scream POOR. The name itself isn't bad (definitely one of the best among the -ane and -elle), but the connotation isn't very good. It's like the -ayden trened in the U.S., you know, silly.

However, if you don't live in Brazil, that won't matter, will it? The computer I'm using now doesn't have a microphone, but as soon as I get home I'll say the name and post it so you can know how it is pronounced (at least here). It's not so different from Roseanne.

Actually, I sort of like it. I prefer Josephine/a, but you clearly said that you don't want that, so yeah.
I do also like Jocelyn, and that's the first time I've heard anyone using the nn Josie for that.

To me it sounds like 'Josie-Anne' which sounds kind of... well... I don't want to say it sounds like a 'hick' name, but it kind of does.

I like Josie, but I agree that it should be a nickname for something. What about Jocelyn or even Joceline? The only other 'Jos' name I can think of besides Josephine and Josette is Josepha. Beyond that, you could name her something like Joanna and call her Josie. It might be a bit of a stretch, but it wouldn't be crazy.

My friend's younger sister is Johanna and she goes by Josie :) I don't think it's a stretch!

I've never heard of this name, but it sounds pretty to me.

I'd pronounce it josie-ann.

I have never met anyone with the nickname Josie from Josiane. My name is Jocelyn and I go by Josie, I know another person with the same name that goes with Jocey, and a friend has a friend named Josephine who uses Josie. So, I'd have no idea what the pronunciation of Josiane would be. I assume like Jo-see-ann.

Josie-wise, for the record, most people for me pronounce it like Jo-zee, except my Jersey relatives are more apt to say Jo-see. :P Which of those were you more leaning towards? I had one professor that always said it like Jah-see, too, and I ended up hating him so it ruined that form of it for me forever.

Think Baby Names.com says Josiane is pronounced like jo-sie-anne. In fact, they also list the spelling Josianne as a legit variant. I kind like it--I think Josie would be a perfect nickname for Josiane/Josianne!

The proper French pronunciation is zho-zee-AHN (zho as in the 'g' sound in 'beige'), zee, AHN. Some people would say "zho-zyahn" as a shortening. zho (again, like beige) zyahn - just how it looks.

I would be inclined to agree. It doesn't look like an American name... I would have a hard time Americanizing it to "jo-see-ann"... much more inclined to say "zho-zyhan"... almost close to Georgienne?

Unfortunately, out of the 15 books I have, only 3 do pronunciations, and none of the 3 had Josiane.

it's a pretty common name where i live. i don't know who to explain the pronunciation, though, my first language is portuguese and i don't really know how to write it phonetically in a way you'd get. but it'd be something like josie-anne. :)
