Actress Mariska Hargitay and her husband, Peter Hermann, had a little boy yesterday. They named him August--no middle name has been released (as of yet.) So his name is August Hermann. I'm not sure if I'm a fan just yet.

According to babynames.com, August is German for "Revered, Exalted."

I like the name August for a boy. It has that whole cool 'word name' thing but also some history behind it.

It's not too out there, but it's not really my style. And the last name Hermann, I think is just bad. Nothing goes REALLY well with it. IMO.

hummm... not sure how I feel about this one, but August Hermann has a "this is a very important man" sound to it...like you'd expect for him to do great things. I love Mariska Hargitay!

I love her, too, but I don't really like the name. Though I was expecting something different out of her, so it makes sense, in a way. Plus, Peter is German, so that makes it a little better.

Even though babynames.com says it's a boy name, I guess I get a feel that it's more of a girly name, though I don't know why.

I totally agree with this on all counts. 1, love Mariska Hargitay. 2. August + Hermann...I think it's the German meaning with the last name, plus August, that makes me think along the "very important man" lines.

It is a very weighty name for a little boy. I feel like he should already be in government.

I got that much. I still think it's a ridiculous name. I don't like Avril, or April, or any other month name, whether or not it's a real name. Anything can be a real name. Hell, there's a kid in the US named Xerox.

So I would think if the name is given to a girl, it's AH-gust, like the month. But if it's given to a boy, it's Ah-GOOSED. Not really my style, but Augustus is a family name and I see this one as very similar.

It's not always Ah-goosed, at least according to behindthename.com, it's Aw-GUS-tus for a boy, which I assume would mean Aw-gust for a boy, as well. But you may be right.
