(no subject)

I just found out my cousin is naming his son Leviathan, to be nicknamed Levi (leev-eye).

This came as a total surprise because they were talking about the name Makai, which I think would have been better. But it was part of a set: Makai and Mona. And then they lost the twin girl, and immediately discarded the name Makai.

What do you think?

It sounds nice, but I hope for the kid's sake that he's not chubby. And that he likes Thomas Hobbes.

isn't leviathan a sea monster or something?

Levi is okay. Isn't a leviathan something not good?

Makai sounds awful and madeup.

I have to admit its a gp. I love the sound, the way it looks, and the nn Levi. BUT it is a horrible giant sea monster LOL

it makes me think of David Leviathan the author.

It's actually Levithan, pronounced Lev-ith-ANN. I ALWAYS want to call him David Leviathan, though.

it's my ex-manager's son's middle name. meh

I love it, despite the connotations. This might have something to do with Scott Westerfeld's new book and my love of monsters, though.

Why don't they just stick with Levi? It's a legit name on its own.

Seriously. The mind boggles. Like naming a kid Loch Ness and because you like the nn Nessie. Whuh?

My roommate's mom wanted to name her Lucy, but her dad REFUSED because he doesn't like Lucille and he felt that it would be silly to name her something that was also a nickname for another name. Lucy is perfetly legit on its own, but because he hates Lucille, he refused to use it!

They went with Madeleine in the end.

i really like the name Leviathan. unfortunately a friend already beat me to Levi. obviously your cousin is looking for something dark and unusual. Personally I would keep Makai and honor the loss his twin.

I understand why they discarded Makai if they lost Mona - it's probably too painful to name their son the name that would have been paired with his sister.

Monster connotations aside, Leviathan is okay. I prefer Levi, but Leviathan reminds me of a literary magazine of the same name.

i like levi fine. do they NEED to do the leviathan thing? levi is great on its own.
