[identity profile] i12bmore.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

It's occured to me that I've known a lot of people who've used nicknames that were an unexpected twist on their names. These are all I can think of off the top of my head:

Aaron > Ron
Christopher > Tophie
Elizabeth > Ebee (pronounced EE-bee)
Roosevelt > Rose
Thomas Edward > Ted
Amanda > Ami (pronounced like Amy)
Malik > Mike
Farid > Fred
Frederick > Rick
Joshua > Jos (pronounced like Joss)
Jeremiah > Miah (pronounced MYE-uh)
Nathaniel > Than (pronounced with a soft "th")

Any of you encounter unexpected nicknames?

my name's Samantha, but my mom calls me "Missantha" most of the time (a twist on "Miss Samantha", which she and my grandma called me when I was being a brat when I was little). that's all I can think of, tho.

I went to high school with a Jeremiah who sometimes went by Miah. I think Ebee as a nn for Elizabeth is absolutely adorable! Tophie would be really cute on a little boy. I don't think Ted or Rick are very unexpected, and Jos isn't totally unexpected to me, but nice to see as an alternative to Josh.

I don't think I've ever known anyone with a particularly unexpected nickname.

oh my family has this fascination with nicknames! I guess it's a bit of a thing in my country since people have weird nicknames but here are some I can think of:

Mona Lisa (From my name Monica Eloisa) - My mother calls me this, I love it.
Mamina - Also mine, from my brother.
Moonie/Moon - My ex didn't speak Spanish so this was the way he figured of saying my most used nickname (Moni) with a 'Spanish accent' and no, it sounds nothing like it but it kinda stuck.

Riny (From Irene) - It's pronounced Reen-ee

Misty - (From Stephanie) Comes from Miss T and then just shortened to Misty.

Vicky - This would not be weird, if it didn't come form the name Victor.

Gobo - Gabriel tens to be shortened to Gabo and we called him Bobo too so it became Gobo.

Blu (like the color blue)- My friend LucĂa gets called this a lot, not entirely sure why.

Fofo - From Rodolfo.

Teby - From Esteban.

My brother is Christopher but he went by Tiffer when he was little because I couldn't pronounce his name correctly. (I'm assuming -topher turned into tiffer somehow- I was two when he was born so I don't remember.)

Ebee is cute. The only one I'm not a fan of is Tophie.

I knew a Robert who went by Bert, which isn't much of a stretch. I just always assumed his full name was Bertram or something. :p And I knew an Elizabeth called Ellie.

His last name is Moss.

One of my roommates was named Catherine, but goes by Kiki. Her little brother had problems saying Catherine when he was little, so he called her Kiki, and the name kind of stuck.

I also had a girl who was in one of my classes whose name was Elizabeth who went by Audney for some reason.
