[identity profile] cremepuff.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I was channel surfing the other day when I stopped briefly on Nickelodeon, which was airing a trivia game show for kids. One of the contestants was a girl who looked about 8 or 9 years old, and her name was: Sabyr. I think the host pronounced it just like 'saber.' I have a hard time picturing this on a little girl, but I do think it would work as the name of a fantasy or sci-fi heroine.

WDYT? And also, any insight as to whether this is a well-established name? I had never heard of it, and some baby name websites say it's a French male name, but...I'll take the word of real people over websites that are sometimes wrong. :)

Makes me think of Saber Tooth from X-Men.

you know what's sad? I've always been a Saber Tooth girl... like since I started reading the comic back in the 90's (I sadly was not around before that... or well I was, I just couldn't read yet xD) but I know everyone is always into Wolverine but me? I was always into my sexy bad boy killing machine (though he's not that bad in AoA and Exiles darn it!)

as for the OP... That's funny you posted this because I was watching an old season of So You Think You Can Dance and there was a contestant (a girl) named Sabra and I thought that was pretty neat but don't think it's a real name.

Actually, I've seen Sabra in baby name books, I believe it's Hebrew, could be wrong. I think it's a form of Sabrina, or rather, Sabrina is a form of Sabra, like "little Sabra." (Why, yes, I do read baby name books cover to cover for fun... no, I don't need medication... probably...)

hah! if you need medication for doing that then I probably need one for reading dictionaries too... or... anything I find that has letters on it xD anyway, it would make sense as -ina tends to be a diminutive in Latin based languages so Sabrina could very well be from Sabra but I hadn't found a truth to that statement or any yet. It does remind me of a Spanish word too so that could or could not be related. I'll ask my lit teacher tomorrow too!

I know a woman named Sabre. Her husband's name is Boise, another name I had never heard before him.

Wow, what are the odds? I'm at work, and I paused while composing this message to answer the phone. The call was from a customer (male) named Sabra.

I'm not a big fan on of it on either sex, but it seems more masculine to me than feminine.

I just posted about the name Sabra, I have been looking to check if it's a legit name or not. I'd never use it myself but maybe a character name.

No idea if it's a legit name or not, but it definitely conjures up images of sci-fi heroines. For some reason, a She-ra (80s cartoon) type character keeps coming to mind. Err... =/

I don't like it.
