[identity profile] patheticinvader.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
After my last post, I thought about how people mispronounce obvious names, and such.

What does everyone think of the name Cullen ("Kull-en")? It's my 6 year old cousin's name, and some aunts and uncles in the family, and family "friends", to this day, call him "Colin" (pronounced Cole-in) and "Collin" (Call-in). They even write his name like that!

Now, in the case of my family, the fact that Cullen's name is mis spelled and mispronounced is due to the laziness and disregard my family has towards actually learning the name.

But, as someone posted in a comment to me, their daughter's name is Rylee and people mispronounce that name, too.

What are some other names that people butcher, such as Cullen and Rylee?

My name is Leigh Ayn, and people always just dismiss my Ayn and call me "Lay"... at places like pharmacies and DMVs where you wait for someone to call your name.

I think Leigh is an obvious "Lee," but I always get the "Lay"

My name is Gili--it's Hebrew--and it's always mispronounced one way or another. I can understand why people would say it as Jillie, which is what most people call me now anyway, but people say Gill-eh and Gye-lee and odd things like that. It's understandable since it's obviously not a common name, but a bit troublesome, though not horribly.

I know Malia, which is getting pretty popular in the States now, gets mispronounced a lot, and a friend of our family named her son Lachlan, which is maybe the second most common name in Australia, but NO ONE seems to be able to pronounce it. Aline and Adeline are mispronounced as well, and my friend Jasmine can't get anyone to say her name correctly (Yasmine). I understand all of those, though, they can be confusing, but my cousin Arielle is constantly being called Ariel, and I think it's pretty easy to see that it's meant to be Ar-ee-ELLE; it's why her parents spelled it that way.

I thought "Kull-en" right away when I saw Cullen.

Amen. Do you hate it? I especially hate getting Lee. No offense to people named that, but it gets on my nerves.

lay-uh is the Hebrew pronunciation of Leah, which is a Hebrew name and that's probably why people are calling you that.

My sisters name is Carey. Most people will try to pronounce it as Kerry when they first meet her. THere are some of her grade school friends who to this day still spell it Carrie. *eye roll* Talk about lazy. My sister is 42!!!

The Carey vs Kerry example may not be a lack of respect, but a regional difference. In some parts of the U.S., people honestly do not hear or make a distinction between words like Mary, marry, and merry. (Where I grew up on the west coast, for instance. A friend from NJ spent quite a while tutoring me on Mary-marry-merry before I could reasonably reproduce the sounds correctly.)

don't worry, they sound COMPLETELY different to me (in Australia)

I've heard that it's funny to ask Americans to say "hurry hairy Harry!" because all those words sound the same in their accents, when they're vastly different in our accent. It's probably the same sort of thing...

Kari - I know two people with names spelled the same way, one pronounces it Car-ee and the other Care-ee.

I'm lucky...you can't misprounce Lindsay very easily ;)

Think again! My roomates on the YC were Julia and Lindsay. Julia is pretty safe, but people actually mispronounced Lindsay's name all the time--they pronounced it lind-SAY, as in the word, say, and when she explained that it's pronounced LINDZ-ee they asked her why it isn't spelled Lindsey! RUDE! Lindsay is the original spelling!

My name is Holland, and a lot of people say it like the place, but perhaps because of my parents' accents, my name is pronounced Hoe-lind. Hollie, my nickname, is pronounced the same as Holly, but Holland is different than you'd think.
*shrug*

This is crazy. There isn't really a WRONG way to pronounce names.
In the case of someone in specific, like your cousin- sure- because people have their own way of pronouncing their name. But don't expect people to know how to pronounce any name.
Names are pronounced differently based on different things: culture, dialect, accent, etc. My name is Jamie. "J-ME" not "HI-MAE".. and while most people around here assume by seeing my name it's "J-ME".. I shouldn't get mad when someone from a Spanish-speaking country says "HI-MAE."
Instead of whining about how someone pronounces your Cousins name wrong.. why don't you tell them how to pronounce it instead. If they keep pronouncing it different than your cousin does, complain all you want- about them being stubborn and stupid.

My [late] great grandfather mispronounced my given name all the time. I suppose that way of saying it is closer to the name it derives from, but even so 'given name' has been common for fifty years and everyone else we knew constantly pronounced it the standard way.
Am sure it's a generational thing, amongst people who were around before the name became common. One of my lectuers is fifty something says my name that way too. It weirds me out in general, but never really correct people because I quite like it (for the reminder of my great grandfather).

My rabbit Branwen gets called Bronwen a fair bit. I suppose because the latter is more common. Slightly annoying because although they sound similiar they have quite diffrent meanings [and meaning was a big factor in choosing the name], that and it's spelt phonetically.

My name is Ashli. *I* would think there's a fair amount of certainty of what the name is and how to say it. Aside from the fact that I always have to spell it for people(thanks mom) I've actually had people ask me if my name is pronounced Ash-lie. Spelling it also throws people off. More often than not when I spell it, they write Ashil or Ashi. Or, they'll get Ashl and I have to say "i" 15 times before they realize that "i" doesnt mean "ie" or "ee" or "iy" or "ey."

My brother's name is Adam Bryon (my dad is Darryl Bryon) and he gets Adam Byron all the time.
