Jun. 24th, 2006 06:41 pmAfter my last post, I thought about how people mispronounce obvious names, and such.
What does everyone think of the name Cullen ("Kull-en")? It's my 6 year old cousin's name, and some aunts and uncles in the family, and family "friends", to this day, call him "Colin" (pronounced Cole-in) and "Collin" (Call-in). They even write his name like that!
Now, in the case of my family, the fact that Cullen's name is mis spelled and mispronounced is due to the laziness and disregard my family has towards actually learning the name.
But, as someone posted in a comment to me, their daughter's name is Rylee and people mispronounce that name, too.
What are some other names that people butcher, such as Cullen and Rylee?

Date: 2006-06-25 02:11 am (UTC)I know Malia, which is getting pretty popular in the States now, gets mispronounced a lot, and a friend of our family named her son Lachlan, which is maybe the second most common name in Australia, but NO ONE seems to be able to pronounce it. Aline and Adeline are mispronounced as well, and my friend Jasmine can't get anyone to say her name correctly (Yasmine). I understand all of those, though, they can be confusing, but my cousin Arielle is constantly being called Ariel, and I think it's pretty easy to see that it's meant to be Ar-ee-ELLE; it's why her parents spelled it that way.
I thought "Kull-en" right away when I saw Cullen.

Date: 2006-06-25 11:56 am (UTC)I've heard that it's funny to ask Americans to say "hurry hairy Harry!" because all those words sound the same in their accents, when they're vastly different in our accent. It's probably the same sort of thing...

Date: 2006-06-25 04:04 am (UTC)In the case of someone in specific, like your cousin- sure- because people have their own way of pronouncing their name. But don't expect people to know how to pronounce any name.
Names are pronounced differently based on different things: culture, dialect, accent, etc. My name is Jamie. "J-ME" not "HI-MAE".. and while most people around here assume by seeing my name it's "J-ME".. I shouldn't get mad when someone from a Spanish-speaking country says "HI-MAE."
Instead of whining about how someone pronounces your Cousins name wrong.. why don't you tell them how to pronounce it instead. If they keep pronouncing it different than your cousin does, complain all you want- about them being stubborn and stupid.

Date: 2006-06-25 10:17 pm (UTC)And lady, I've been telling my family for 6 years his name is not pronounced or spelled like Colin. My family is a load of jackasses who don't pay attention.
Read the rest of the replies to this post. I asked about butchering. You can't pronounce some names differently because of location, dialect, culture, etc, if they're spelled in an obvious way.
If a Japanese man comes to the US and says my name wrong, THAT is understandable.
If someone from Texas comes to Vegas and says the name Rylee like "Ray-lee", he's an idiot.

Date: 2006-06-25 06:36 pm (UTC)Am sure it's a generational thing, amongst people who were around before the name became common. One of my lectuers is fifty something says my name that way too. It weirds me out in general, but never really correct people because I quite like it (for the reminder of my great grandfather).
My rabbit Branwen gets called Bronwen a fair bit. I suppose because the latter is more common. Slightly annoying because although they sound similiar they have quite diffrent meanings [and meaning was a big factor in choosing the name], that and it's spelt phonetically.
