Funny stories behind names/spelling of names?

Does anyone have a funny story behind the name, or the spelling of their name?

A friend of mine, Mathew is missing a T in his name. Mathew is also an accepted spelling, but he was supposed to be Matthew. His dad was drunk when he filled in the birth certificate form, hence he became Mathew!

Nothing exciting about mine - except that I was named after punk-pop artist Cyndi Lauper, who, in 1984 (the year I was born), won a Grammy for Best New Artist and selling nine million copies of her album She's So Unusual.

EDIT: Might be good to post these as comments, rather than new entries/posts, as I've seen my friends page majorly clogged with these "family names" post over the last 48 hours...

Well, this isn't someone I know, but a woman my mother worked with, she wanted to name her daughter Ever but because of her accent when telling the nurse the name for the certificate - it became Evah - pronounced ev-uh.

haha that's so funny! this isn't name related, but one of my friends has the wrong birth date on his certificate because the doctor didn't know what day it was.

My mom and my brother's dad also filled out the birth certificate wrong so my brother's real name is Mister! Everyone calls him Michael and I believe/hope it was legally changed, but his birth certificate still says Mister.

I'm Kaitlin Elizabeth because my parents wanted something irish to go with my very irish last name and in honor of my aunts, Katherine and Elizabeth.

originally back in 84'-year i was born- ultrasounds werent as advanced as they are now, so they were told i was going to be a little boy. so my parents picked the name Jerimiah Joseph. the only part of that name i know why they picked it was Joseph, after my dad...

but the day i was born, i was delivered, 'aww congratulations,it's a girl'..my parents were a tad o_O.lol. so they picked Jessika Lyn as my name. Jessika was after a redhead my dad was IN.LOVE.WITH. back then, lol. and Lyn was after my grandmother:-)

Amen to the family name thing! I dont have a funny story to my name either, but the drunk thing occurs frequently or people misprounouncing a name and spelling it wrong because they had to sound it out.

There's a huge dispute in my family over whether my brother's middle name is "Scott" or "Scot". No one thinks to check his birth certificate, so it's an ongoing thing. I can't even find the damn certificate, but I say Scott. Gah.

my sister has a friend named tabor that has an interesting name story. his mom wanted to name him taylor, but she was so drugged up from labor that the nurse misunderstood her and put down his name as "tabor".

My parents were going to spell my name as L-I-A, but someone told them weeks before I was born that it looked too Polynesian, which we are not, so they changed it. I'm not sure exactly why they changed it, though? We have nothing against Polynesians. But now it's spelled L-E-A-H, the Biblical way.

coming from another leah, i'm glad you're spelling it the "normal" way! i think it looks so much better, but maybe that's just me. :)

My parents were getting really hard pressed for a name as my due date approached. My mom was flipping through a baby name book and decided to look at Cecilia (my grandmother's middle name) and Sheila was listed as an alternate form. She looked up Sheila and it said "An Irish form of Cecilia" and she was sold. (We have a verrrrrrrry Irish last name)

When I was almost a year old, she stuck an "h" on the end for no apparent reason. She's claimed various reasons throughout the years, including and not limited to: It looked 'unfinished' without it; Sarah can have an 'h' on the end, why can't Sheilah; F. Scott Fitzgerald's mistress was Sheilah Graham; she didn't like the way two vowels looked next to each other (our last name starts with O).

Still without the H on the birth certificate and passport, but I have the H on everything else. I've gotten accustomed to it being spelled that way, and I kinda dig it.

I believe it was my great great aunt whose father forgot what he was supposed to name her, when he went to register her, way back when, in Germany. He knew that there was some connection to the name his wife had chosen, but he couldn't remember what. So he named her Mathilde, after the street they lived on. She was supposed to be Caroline (also my name), after another relative.

The funny thing is, my parents didn't know this story when they named me. In fact, they didn't know that between the two sides of my family, there are at least 3 Carolines, if you go back far enough. All they knew was that my mother was supposed to be Caroline, and then too many other babies born in the same hospital that week were Caroline, so her parents chose something else and she ended up naming me Caroline.

Nothing remotly interesting about my first name, my middle name though ...
I have an elder cousin Claire, whom my parents were very fond off. So they felt it would be a great middle name for me. Though my father in his infinte wisdom decided that they needed to change the spelling so it'd be 'my name' ergo not to cause confusion or something. So my mn ended up being Clair.
Apparently that particular spelling was used because dad had got it into his head that was 'the authentic English spelling'. Which may be true, but have also discovered it's technically a boys name, and the French word for clear. Oh and it took me twelve years to spell it right.

Three years later they had my brother, which was great because they actually had a name picked out this time [Richard]. Just the one though, which meant he was middle nameless. So they let me choose one for him; Thomas ... after the tank engine.

My best friend's dad was reading the paper, saw the name of the 'page three girl' so said 'what about Janine?', and obviously her mother went along with it ... nothing like being named after a topless model to set you up for life :)

My other good friend is named Davis, which means 'son of David' ... and yeah he actually is.

My dad's name is "Danuil" because his aunt had NO idea how to spell Daniel and filled out the birth certificate wrong!

My parents got the idea for my name from a soap that they used to watch. Apparently one of the doctors in it had a baby girl called Lauren.

My name is Janee' (Ja-Nay) Shanna

I was named for 2 relatives, My aunt Anna Jane and my mom's cousin Shannon. (Shannon and Anna became Shanna, and Jane + e = Janee')

nothing funny, I just think its a little odd.

I do know someone who wanted to name her daughter Cheyenne, but couldnt spell it, so her name is Shyann.

My friend Erica was supposed to be an Erika. The doctor spelled it wrong.
