[identity profile] jadedone2many.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I am 28 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and 1st boy.
The husband & I are pretty much 100% settled on the name for him: Emmett Edward
Our last name is Kelly, so his initials will be EEK, which I have thought about, but I've ultimately decided it won't be that big of a deal.
His big sister is named Elizabeth Malie (Malie comes from her godmother's middle name), and while I wasn't intentionally going for an "E" trend, I kind of like it. Should we have any more children, I doubt they will have an "E" name.
Oh, and FYI, my name is Jessica Elizabeth and my hubby's name is Matthew Edward.

The reasoning behind the names:
Emmett is my grandfather's middle name, and my grandfather was very, very special to me. He was more like a father to me, and I lost him when I was 14 to a stroke. :( His first name was Harry, which I don't much like, plus my dad is Harry, Jr., and I don't much like my dad LOL so I didn't really want to feel like I was honoring my dad, y'know?
Edward is the middle name that is given to every 1st born Kelly male in my hubby's family, and I like the name well enough to go along with the tradition.

HOWEVER. I know that these names are going to come off to people as having come from the failtasticever-popular Twilight series, which I loathe. I have already had a couple of comments about the name at a recent baby shower ("Oh, you must REALLY love Twilight, huh" "Actually, no, I despise it..."). :/

So... what do you all think of the name? Hate it? Like it?
Also, what do you think I should say in combat to the comments I'm likely to continue getting in regards to his name?

EDIT: Thanks for your comments & reassurance, everyone. It is greatly appreciated! :D

Twilight references aside (since it's obvious you didn't pick the names for that), I love it.

Twilight has already ruined vampires, young adult fiction, and the capacity for critical thought among adolescent females. Why do people have to let it ruin a name? Because certainly the name "Edward" did not exist before Stefanie Meyer skillfully penned her masterpiece.

< /rant >

It's a lovely name with a lovely history, he'll be proud to carry it. If anyone mentions the T-novel, just answer, "Twilight? What does my son's name have to do with early evening?"

love your rant, love it to pieces. I also agree with what you say about the names, they are wonderful and tasteful and just... make believe you have no idea what Twilight is.

My husband is 25, but he was totally named after Twilight, must be! Edward didn't exist (or at least matter) until it was attached to a dream boat vampire

(note: I've never read or watched Twilight)

Edward is such a standard name, and has been reasonably popular for so long, that no one in their right minds can assume you copied it from the book. If people ask, tell the it's a family name, or tell them you're sorry they're jumping to false conclusions.

I have never read Twilight and I didn't make the connection with the name until you pointed it out.
I think it's a nice name.

I think it's a great name, unfortunately it did make me automatically think of Twilight :(

But it's unlikely any of the kids his own age will know anything about it because hopefully this crazy fad will die out soon.

I think you have perfectly good reasoning for using both names. However, you seem to loathe Twilight an awful lot... and if that's the case, since people will inevitably comment on the Twilight thing, you might want to re-think the name, if it's really going to bother you that much.

Honestly, if you get a Twilight comment, just politely say, "No, he was not named after Twilight." Or, "No, I'm not personally a fan of Twilight." If they keep arguing, they're mentally unhinged, so don't worry about it. I don't see that there's any need to combat anything.

For what it's worth, I've been ignoring this whole Twilight phenomenon and if any of those names but Edward is related to it in any way, I have no idea. I can't be the only one who isn't in on this fad, but even if I were, for people to solely attach such a good, solid, classic name to a modern fandom is ridiculous. Next time someone brings it up, I'd punch them.

Just kidding. I'd just tell them it's a family name. THEN I'd punch them.

Seriously, though, it's a great name. People will forget about that series once it's not constantly being shoved in our faces, and the other school children won't be teasing him over any imagined connections, so I don't think it will be a long-term problem, just a current annoyance.

Edward is just a name. And a very traditional, popular one at that. It should not be ruined by silly Twilight. You give that child that name, and in a couple of years, no one will be saying stuff like that. G-d, I hope.

So now, anyone who likes the name/uses the name/has family significance with the name Edward must automatically be a Twilight fan? >_< Edward is a fairly common name.

I don't really know the Twilight series (Vampires=not sexy for me), is there another name you mentioned that suggests a theme I missed?

I'm not a huge fan of the name Emmett but since you're trying to honor someone very important to you, I don't even think you need to ask our opinions ;) You got your name picked out! Yeah, the EEK thing might be a little weird (maybe wanna throw a second middle name in there?) but also, it's not that big a deal. I think it's a fine name. I like Elizabeth too

Emmett is a character's name in the Twilight series, so the combination of Emmett Edward could be seen as coming straight from the books.

Personally, I really like the name and think the personal meaning to you should outweigh a passing pop culture fad. You don't have to explain anything to anyone...if they ask about the Twilight connection, just tell them that wasn't your intention.

Ahh, the only names I remember for Twilight (from just hearing it mentioned here and there) Are Jake and Edward and I think Bella, so I really wasn't sure

omg... this... I had no idea Emmett was a Twilight name too *gasp* I only know Bella, Jasper and Edward because... if I see one more 'I heart Edward' shirt... I will probably like... don' know... go up in flames. And Bella because of the Bella + Edward shit and Jasper because I liked the name and someone asked me if I am a Twilight fan... yeah, no.

I recently broke down and read the Twilight series, but when I read the names Emmett and Edward, I didn't think anything of it. I like the name because IMO it's a "classic" name and fits with the style of name I like, and I love that it means something to you.

Personally, I'm not fond of the way it flows. If it were me, I'd probably end up telling my hubby "I understand this is 'tradition' in your family, however I would prefer using a different middle name."

Looking at your husband's name, I like Emmett Matthew better than Emmett Edward. But, that's JMO.

My husband's middle name is Edward, too.

Just tell people "no, it's after my husband" or "what's twilight?"

I like the names! If people infer a Twilight connection, simply tell them that these names--and the Universe, for that matter--existed loooong before that crappy series ever did!

just [say]... "what's twilight?" -[livejournal.com profile] harinakshi
oh my goodness, that would be amazing. i'd love to see the reaction to that XD

i love the name emmett edward, and twilight is so failtastic not bound to be an ageless classic that kids his age probably wouldn't catch on anyway. and you have good reasons for using the names :)

Personally, I would make it Emmett Matthew Edward, for two reasons.. One, it breaks up the Twighlight connection, and secondly, possibly more important in the long term, is it gets rid of the EEK. Most people won't care, but if there's just one who makes a big deal out of it, he will be miserable - as a KEG, I know. And besides, you daughter has one of your names.

I do like both the names though :-)

Honestly, I'm a really big Twilight fan and I never made the connection that you would be naming him in relation to Twilight until someone mentioned it. :P It never even occurred to me. I think Emmett Edward is wonderful, and I don't think EEK really matters.

Twilight definitley was not the first thing I thought; this coming from a person who has read them all more then once.

I really love both names. The initals don't even bother me, either. =]
