I just met someone with a little girl named, "Bronte Charlotte."

I asked her why she named her this, and she said, "Of course, after the writer of Jane Eyre."

So then, I asked her, "Why didn't you just name her Charlotte? Don't you think Bronte sounds masculine?"

She answered... and I'm not kidding... "Obviously it's a female name, since that is her name. I'm not going to just go with Charlotte because it's more common."

Confused, I asked her, "Charlotte isn't that common, but I don't get why you flip-flopped her first and last name. If her name is too common, then why didn't you just pick something else?"

And we get to where you know she's going with this, "Um, her name is Bronte Charlotte. Look it up, you'll find, Jane Eyre, written by Bronte Charlotte. Bronte isn't common at all, and she has an incredible historical namesake. Do your research before being judgmental!"

I didn't bother telling her that there is a comma between Bronte and Charlotte, but I'm sure her daughter will point it out to her once she reaches her level of intelligence at what, age 9?

I laughed. Hard. Especially since I adore Jane Eyre.

I wish I could laugh, but I just feel bad, mostly for that poor baby girl

I have a cousin named Bronte, after the writers. But I'm pretty sure that her parents knew it was the writers' surname. Yikes.

I confess, Bronte (with the umlaut, which I can never make on this keyboard) is one of my guilty pleasures.

But Bronte Charlotte? I'm sorry, unknown mother, you are unwittingly hilarious.

Fail on the Bronte Charlotte not Charlotte Bronte part.

But Charlotte is pretty common. It's in the top 20 on most baby name websites. Personally I think Bronte is a girls name but that's only because I've met 3 different Brontes.

Bronte (with the umlaut) is also one of my guilty pleasures and I know a girl about 17 with that name, but Bronte Charlotte is pretty bad.

No, the umlaut goes over the E.

I had to look that up! A diæresis is for two vowels together, according to Wikipedia.

Haha, heavy metal umlaut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_umlaut).

Yeah, but I'm still not sure that makes a difference. I wish I didn't have to go buy art with my mother in ten minutes, because I could spend all day looking up stuff like this.

I still love it as a name. Right now I have an Animal Crossing town named Haworth and my main character is, of course, Brontë. I've had all my kids, so I'll have to use it as a gaming/doll/pet name. *sigh*

It was Brunty. I just read this fabulous book called The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte which is the only reason I know this factoid.

I highly recommend the book, btw.

But just why didn't you point out that Jane Eyre is written by Charlotte Bronte, and not Bronte Charlotte? You could've told her to do HER research, I would've loved to see her face or hear her argument.

Ugh that's awful. Did this woman not go to high school?

I hate this trend of Bronte as a first name. I find it snobbish, and it always makes me think of the Beanie Baby brontosaurus, which was named Bronty.

When I worked at a summer camp, there were three little girls named Bronte, Charlotte, and Emily, and they were all friends. I found that rather amusing.

Has this woman ever HELD a copy of Jane Eyre? And, you know, actually SEEN "Charlotte Bronte" written on the cover? Not that it matters, but I wonder if she's read the book. How could you screw up the author's name like that if you've read it?

I <3 Jane Eyre

How on earth has this woman got to adulthood without understanding how fiction is generally organised? Has she never seen a copy of the book?

That poor kid.

Haha, that's so weird.

I think it's a slight fail on your part that you picked on her child's name. It's alright to laugh about it on here, but to someone's face?

The name Bronte always reminds me of this girl: http://www.thenile.com.au/books/Steve-Bibb/Brontes-Story/9781740513074/

In health class when I was at school we watched a couple of documentaries about her struggle, and I always remember those when I think of the name.

doesn't she have a sister name Bronte Emily? so they both got the same first name but different last names? weird.

They're like, uh, what's his name... George Foreman. He has five sons, all named George. Obviously the Brontes' parents were just... ahead of their time.

I know a dog named Bronte. I'm not opposed to the name, but Bronte Charlotte? how can one name a baby after an author whose name they don't actually know?

I knew a little girl named Keats, and I thought that was adorable. She wasn't Keats John.

I have heard of girls called Bronte (not that I like it though) and Charlotte is definitely a top 10 name where I live, so the name isn't that strange to me.

But wow... how could she live her whole life thinking that the author was called Bronte Charlotte?
