Literally. FAIL.
Sep. 6th, 2009 10:09 pmI just met someone with a little girl named, "Bronte Charlotte."
I asked her why she named her this, and she said, "Of course, after the writer of Jane Eyre."
So then, I asked her, "Why didn't you just name her Charlotte? Don't you think Bronte sounds masculine?"
She answered... and I'm not kidding... "Obviously it's a female name, since that is her name. I'm not going to just go with Charlotte because it's more common."
Confused, I asked her, "Charlotte isn't that common, but I don't get why you flip-flopped her first and last name. If her name is too common, then why didn't you just pick something else?"
And we get to where you know she's going with this, "Um, her name is Bronte Charlotte. Look it up, you'll find, Jane Eyre, written by Bronte Charlotte. Bronte isn't common at all, and she has an incredible historical namesake. Do your research before being judgmental!"
I didn't bother telling her that there is a comma between Bronte and Charlotte, but I'm sure her daughter will point it out to her once she reaches her level of intelligence at what, age 9?

Date: 2009-09-07 03:34 am (UTC)But Charlotte is pretty common. It's in the top 20 on most baby name websites. Personally I think Bronte is a girls name but that's only because I've met 3 different Brontes.

Date: 2009-09-07 06:00 pm (UTC)I still love it as a name. Right now I have an Animal Crossing town named Haworth and my main character is, of course, Brontë. I've had all my kids, so I'll have to use it as a gaming/doll/pet name. *sigh*

Date: 2009-09-09 03:07 am (UTC)The completely un-Italian diacritical accent which Patrick took to using over his final e had, it seems, most often initially the form of a macron or tilde ( viz ̄ or ̃ ). Only later does he seem to have made regular use of a diaeresis. and then possibly only as a direct result of a printing error (ibid. p. 69) by which it appeared on the title page of his first book. The reason that he took to using such a device was presumably to draw attention to the fact that the name was not meant to be pronounced as a single syllable, as it should have been had it been of French or Portuguese origin.

Date: 2009-09-07 05:08 am (UTC)But it reminded me of something. My mom used to tell me that I was born on Easter. She truly believed I was. Eventually, I found out I was born on a Saturday. I'm hoping that Bronte can someday tell her mother what an idiot she is, like I could with mine. lol

Date: 2009-09-07 06:07 am (UTC)I hate this trend of Bronte as a first name. I find it snobbish, and it always makes me think of the Beanie Baby brontosaurus, which was named Bronty.
When I worked at a summer camp, there were three little girls named Bronte, Charlotte, and Emily, and they were all friends. I found that rather amusing.

Date: 2009-09-07 01:49 pm (UTC)I didn't add in the beginning of the conversation, where she said my DD was adorable and asked her name, and when I told her what it was, she told me that she knew like 7 other little girls named that, and it was terrible or something because the only one she knew growing up was always called a skanky nickname.

Date: 2009-09-07 01:45 pm (UTC)Even if she had added the diæresis, it's still technically a gender-neutral name, but I'm fairly certain that's only because it's being given to girls.
