My husband and I watched 27 Dresses last night and as the credits rolled I noticed the name

Malin

I assumed it was pronounced Mah-lin but looking on babynamesworld.com I see its actually Mah-leen.

WDYT?

Also, do you think Lily is on the rise to the top ten? I love the name but we are trying to stay away from anything too popular.

From what I've seen, Lily is getting extremely popular as both a full name and a real name.

What does that mean? "both a full name and a real name"

In the Netherlands, we pronounce it as Mah-lin (or at least, the Malin I know pronounces it like this) and I like that pronunciation way better than Mah-leen.

The name is on my list, I really like it.

I definitely think Lily is on the rise. It's gone from place 103 in 2001 to 24 in 2008. It could be in the top 10 next year. I like the name Lillian, it was my great grandmother's middle name actually, but naming her that and calling her Lily, I think would kind of defeat the purpose of trying to choose a name that's not too popular. Think about in school, etc. It wouldn't make much of a difference to the kids.

I think I would have pronounced it May-lin too without knowing the pronunciation. Malin is definitely good if you want to be really unique for the U.S. anyway as it hasn't been in the top 1000 for the past 100 years.

According to Behind the Name, Malin is the Swedish short form of Magdalene. I instantly thought of Mary Magdalene from the Bible, and sure enough it says "From a title which meant "of Magdala". Mary Magdalene, a character in the New Testament, was named thus because she was from Magdala - a village on the sea of Galilee whose name meant "tower" in Hebrew. She was cleaned of evil spirits by Jesus and then remained with him during his ministry, witnessing the crucifixion and the resurrection. She was a popular saint in the Middle Ages, and the name became common then. In England it is traditionally rendered Madeline, while Magdalene or Magdalen is the learned form." So Madeline is another form of that name as well. I think that's pretty interesting.

I thought it was MAh-lin also and I'm sure it would be constantly mispronounced

I would pronounce it May-lin or Mah-lin.

Just for the record, although I guess it could be pronounced Mah-Leen, I had a student this last year whose name was Ailin (pronounced like Eileen) and I just wanted to smack her parents. In English, an i by itself does not make a 'long ee' sound. It must be from another language?

me again

I hate to admit it, but my husband and I got our (super secret) next girl's name from a movie ourselves. At least it was an awesome movie. :)

Lily is totally up there here in Australia and I would actually be surprised if it's not top 10 here :(
Sad, because it was my grandmother's name and she just passed away this year so I would have thought about using it somehow. But I don't think it goes with our last name anyway.

Malin is a Scandinavian name, and I've always liked it (I'm a sucker for Scandinavian names). I like the way it's pronounced in Swedish...with more emphasis on the 'Mah-' part somehow. It's difficult to describe.

But to put things short: nice name!

If Lily doesn't officially hit the top 10, it'll probably only be because of so many spelling variations and people using extended names like Lillian or Liliana.

I assume Mah-lin as well. But I have had a few friends named Marin (Mah-rin) so that clouds it for me.

LOVE the name Lily. It's my cat's name. D'oh!

I know a girl named Malin, pronounced MAY-lin. I like that pronunciation, but not the others.

It's Malin Ackerman (as mentioned above) and I've always heard it pronounced May-lin. I like that better than May-leen. It reminds me some of Maryn which I love.

it's pronounced MAH-lin

As for Lily, I love the name but it doesn't sound as pretty in Norwegian.

I would've prn it May-lin, like Palin with an M.

Also, I'm surprised Lily ISN'T in the top 10. It used to be one of my favorites but I hear it all the time now an I'm kinda bored with it lol
