Name and Characteristics

Do you ever think of certain names and picture the child? Liek not race or ethnicity necessarily but more of blue eyes blonde hair, brown eyes brown hair, dark hair with hazel eyes... etc...

Some of the names I associated with characteristics:

Gabrielle - Brown hair Brown Eyes
Liam - Boy Dark Hair, Brown or Hazel Eyes
Emily - BLonde Hair Blue Eyes
Michael - Blonde Hair Blue Eyes

I dunno its not just associations but sometimes someone will suggest a name and Ill like it and think its pretty but hesistate to use it because my kids will have blonde hair and blue eyes and not brown hair brown eyes like I associate the name with...

Like the name Natalie

I love this name and want to use it for my daughter but i dunno..

Does anyone else ever have this tendancy?

All the Leahs I've known have brown hair, so I relate it to brown hair.

I do that all the time. I think everyone does. I relate names to people I know with the name.

I actually don't do it. I only do it if I know that the name means "fair-haired" or something, but otherwise I don't link appearance associations to names (although sometimes I link personality traits to names)

I wouldnt be sure about that. I have dark hair/dark eyes. My sons father has medium brown hair/green eyes. My son has blondish hair/blue eyes.

Although 3/4 of the kids I know have blonde hair and blue eyes even though their parents don't - they grow up and their hair and eyes darken.

Well his hair seems to be getting lighter and lighter. His hair was pretty dark when he was born, but by 6 months was almost complete blonde.

I definitely associate certain names with certain characteristics. In fact, I actually associate Gabrielle and Liam with blonde hair and Emily and Michael with dark. Hmmm.

I was sure my son would have dark hair; and, when I picked his name (Henry), I was picking a name I thought would match his characteristics. He turned out nothing like what I pictured. And, of course, he has blonde hair.

Natalie is a really pretty name...

my association of Emily is the complete mirror of yours.
I think brown hair bright blue or dark brown eyes. thats because every emily i've ever known fits that description.
I like Natalie though. It was the name I always took when I was little and we played house or something. :)

You never know what your kids will look like! My parents both have dark hair but blue eyes & assumed i would too...
i have blonde hair & dark brown eyes, genetics is a tricky thing, never certain. (& no im not adopted, and my daddy really is my daddy!!)

Having said that, i'll actually comment on what you asked.
I kind of see what you mean, but more like... names that I think are really pretty & gorgeous (Anabelle, Amelia, Anastasia, Marissa etc) are all really really girly.. that's just my style.. what happens if my daughter it an ugly tomboy & doesnt live up to her name :-p (of course, being my daughters they could never be ugly!lol)

I definitely agree- however I think that once you name your child, whether or not you see a "Natalie" with blond hair and blue eyes and your child comes out with brown hair and brown eyes, you'll start to see Natalie as your baby, too. :)

I think of Erin as a blonde haired, blue eyed girl - which is weird because I'm Erin and I have black hair.
