I was researching my family tree and found this gem: Grayce.  She was born in 1896.  Somehow, I thought they stayed away from creative spellings back then.  But her parents must have liked it or something.  She also named her daughter Grayce (born in 1929).

There's a chance that they might not have known the standard spelling in 1896.

My grandfather (born sometime in the 1910's) was named Sydney - not exactly a creative spelling, but I associate Sydney with being a girl's name and Sidney being a boy's.

Would Grayce be pronounced like Grace or Gracie?
It looks like Gracie to me but I'm pretty sure its Grace.

My cousin's legal name is Grayce, but when she started college, she started spelling it "Grace". I want to say she's 24, but I am a terrible cousin and can't recall.

Just ftr: Aside from my sister and me, English is not our family's first language, and my aunt ended up misspelling my cousin's name. She claims that she saw the name spelled with a Y somewhere, and she thought that was the standard spelling.
