Ethnic name

Hi all, I'd like to hear opinions on a name, and suggestions for middle name.

The name is Abrihet - pronounced "Ah-bree-het(rhymes with jet) It's African and it's meaning is she shines/emanates light.
I realize some probably wont like it, but I love different names, and to me, this one isn't too different as to seem completely unappealing to everyone not of its ethnic origin.
I like how the first part of the name Abri "ah-bree" - is pretty identical sounding to that of the name Aubrey. I prefer Abrihet for everything about it, in that it's meant as just a girls name, (whereas Aubrey is unisex) it's different, it has (to me) a nice meaning, and because it's ethnic ( I have African ancestry on my father's side). And maybe it's just me, but it makes me think of Audrey Hepburn, whom I love! :)

So aside from not liking it, (for those who do) any middle name suggestions? I don't have a preference, just something that flows well, sounds nice.

TIA!

Side note: On the baby name site I found the name Abrihet, I just saw that some girl posted about what she and her husband intend to name their daughter. The name, which she says she isn't joking about... Bazooka Joan. I like different names, but I don't think Bazooka is a good choice at all. O.o

First of all, I have very few qualms with people (like you) who find uniqueness in legitimate names that are just uncommon or of a different origin rather than those people who butcher perfectly good names to be dyfferint ;) Abrihet is, while not my style at all, a nice name.

And Bazooka Jane?! Are you KIDDING ME?! All I can think is Bazooka Joe. Terrible terrible all around.

I actually really like it. I'm not much of a fan of Aubrey, but Abrihet is rather pretty.

Yes, people will mispronounce it, and yes, people will misspell it, but it is a nice (and legitimate) name so I think there is nothing wrong with it. Plus, if so desired sometime down the road, more English nicknames can be derived from it. Abbie, Bri/Bree, Hettie

Abrihet Amelia
Abrihet Jeanine/Jane/Janelle
Abrihet Rose

When I said Abrihet out loud I really liked it a lot - classy but pretty too. And I pronounced it correctly before reading your phonetics. :)

I like a simple middle name: Abrihet Rose, or something else not "too harsh"

I rather like the sound of Abrihet, though she will spend a lot of time spelling pronouncing it for people unless she's growing up somewhere where whichever language it's from is spoken.

I do, however, really dislike your use of the word "ethnic".

I understand your feelings about your African heritage, and I like the idea of using that in naming your children. What I meant was that originally all names pertained to a certain culture, so it seems meaningless to say one is ethnic while another is not.

Abrihet? I've seen this name before in a Buffy fanfic... and I liked it from the first moment. I think it's a really good choice, and allows a lot of nice nicknames.

Bazooka Joan's parents should be arrested. :)

Abrihet...I like the sound of that. It's hard to think of good middle names for that, though! ;) Some suggestions:

Abrihet Leah (I think both the Lee-ah and Lay-ah pronunciations sound good)
Abrihet Faye
Abrihet Mia
Abrihet June
Abrihet Lina/Lila
Abrihet Joni
Abrihet Elle
Abrihet Zinzi
Abrihet Sofie
Abrihet Mara

Africa isn't homogeneous. If you don't know what specific language/culture it's from, you probably shouldn't use it.

It's a nice name but the only problem with the info provided is that "African" isn't a language or specific culture. It's misleading because there are so many different languages and cultures in Africa. I Googled the name, and a couple results suggested that the name is from the language Tigrinya, which is a spoken in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Another result said that it's Amharic, which is a different language from Tigrinya although they are sister languages. I think that when you find a name that you like in a language that you don't speak, you should just do extra research on it to make sure you get the origin and meaning right because the info on baby naming sites just isn't always accurate. I'd even go as far as to track down an Abrihet on facebook or something and ask them if they can tell you the origin and meaning of the name; maybe it sounds paranoid but if it's my child's name then I'd want to make sure I got it right ; )
