[identity profile] cathkitten.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Someone posted about Months of the Year names like June and April, so I thought I'd follow up and ask:

What gemstone names do you all like?

List of some traditional "gemstone" names:

Ruby
Opal
Pearl
Jade
Sapphira (Sapphire)
Esmeralda (Emerald)
Amethyst
Coral

I can't think of any more right now but I know there must be. I really like Ruby and Opal and that's about it.

Everytime I hear the name Ruby, I either picture a) showgirl or b) the woman in the Kenny Rogers song who's playing around on her wounded vet husband.

I don't really like any of them, to be honest. Either too old fashioned (like Pearl) or too out there (like Sapphira).

I have loved the name Ruby for years :)
Mostly because 'ruby tuesday', the character in 'cold mountain' is a good association too.
My birthstone is Opal, so like that too.
I know a girl named Sapphire, she does have blue eyes so it really fits her.
Had a goldfish a few years ago named Coral, so wouldn't use it again.

Onyx is pretty cool too, as a middle name [knew a boy named Xavier Onyx].

I knew a Ruby Jean... although Ruby is a nice name, paired with that, it makes it so trailer trash it's not even funny.

Alexandrite is another one :)

I like:

Ruby, Jade, Sapphire, Emerald, Coral... Let's see... Garnet isn't bad. I hate red gemstones though.

I had a wonderful nurse named Opal, so I have to say I love that name for that reason.

I also like Esmeralda, Esme for short. I plan on naming a future daughter Esme, though it won't be short for anything, it will just be her name.

I also like Jade and though I don't like Coral, I do think Cora is nice.

I like Ruby a lot. Jade, Coral, and Opal would be ok as names, but I would never use them. Pearl is too old-fashioned, and the rest would just be bad.

Quebique Zyrkoniah ;)

I like Ruby (although it reminds me of the girl who died in Anne of Green Gables!). Pearl is nice, but I wouldn't use it for a first name. I like the idea of Opal, but I'm not too crazy about the way it sounds.

Fun post :)

My friends dog is named Ruby lol so everytime I hear the name, I think of her dog. I like the name Jade though... Pearl is kinda old fashioned, and Coral makes me think of the chick on Real World lol

There's a little girl named Ruby in one of the preschools in my school, and I think it's such a cute name. It's also my birthstone. :)

I know someone who has a bunny named Pearl, so I don't think I could ever picture it as a baby name again.

I've always liked Jade.

I like Jade, Ruby, Coral and Sapphira (pronounced Sah-fear-ah rather than like Sapphire with an a).

I prefer Cora to Coral, though.

The others are a bit too over the top.

Not really a fan of any of these names, or of gemstone names in particular it would seem (having scoped out that wiki link).

However, Hypothetical Daughter #1 will be named Mara Jade (not a double first name, also non-negotiable and Hypothetical Other Parent will just have to suck it), so I suppose I like the name Jade. Said child is being named after my favorite fictional character so the names come together, sort of a package deal.

Ruby, Pearl and Gemma have been on my favorites list for years. My daughter and I even named one of our betta fish Ruby. She was quite the pretty fishy. :)

A lot of gem names sound like words, not names, so I don't think they're that nice. e.g. Amethyst, Opal

I've always liked Ruby but I don't think I would give a child that name so maybe one day I will name a cat or dog that :p

I would like Jade except I knew a particularly obnoxious one when I was a teenager

Gemma is ok.
Margaret means "pearl"
Jasper is ok

I just saw something like this on a forum. Here's what they said:

Jade
Jayden
Citrine
Peridot
Ruby
Pearl
Jasper
Amber
Amethyst
Emerald/Esmerelda (nn Emmy/Emma)
Cordelia (means jewel of the sea)
Jewel
Sapphire
Coral

I would only really use Ruby but more for a mn and because it's my birthstone.

Every Jade that I've known has been snotty, spoiled, and stuck-up :/

And I don't like any of the rest of them.

My youngest sister's name is Jade, but we pronounce it Ya-deh. Because that's how it's pronounced in Finnish (which we are, so it makes sense). Both my name and my other sister's names also have the J as a Y when explaining it to someone who speaks English (Yulia and Yasmin as it were). Although both of us just let people pronounce our names whichever way they think is correct. So we have three different pronounciations for our names (we live in the French part of Belgium).

And I do like Ruby. Pearl just sounds very grandmother-y to me. Esmeralda is pretty but it makes me think of the character from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Amethyst is interesting, but I wouldn't name my child that (I need something that my mother can pronounce with ease in Finnish).
