Jun. 5th, 2006 03:45 pmSomeone posted about Months of the Year names like June and April, so I thought I'd follow up and ask:
What gemstone names do you all like?
List of some traditional "gemstone" names:
Ruby
Opal
Pearl
Jade
Sapphira (Sapphire)
Esmeralda (Emerald)
Amethyst
Coral
I can't think of any more right now but I know there must be. I really like Ruby and Opal and that's about it.

Date: 2006-06-05 07:56 pm (UTC)Everytime I hear the name Ruby, I either picture a) showgirl or b) the woman in the Kenny Rogers song who's playing around on her wounded vet husband.
I don't really like any of them, to be honest. Either too old fashioned (like Pearl) or too out there (like Sapphira).

Date: 2006-06-05 08:03 pm (UTC)Mostly because 'ruby tuesday', the character in 'cold mountain' is a good association too.
My birthstone is Opal, so like that too.
I know a girl named Sapphire, she does have blue eyes so it really fits her.
Had a goldfish a few years ago named Coral, so wouldn't use it again.
Onyx is pretty cool too, as a middle name [knew a boy named Xavier Onyx].

Date: 2006-06-05 08:09 pm (UTC)I like:
Ruby, Jade, Sapphire, Emerald, Coral... Let's see... Garnet isn't bad. I hate red gemstones though.

Date: 2006-06-05 08:12 pm (UTC)I also like Esmeralda, Esme for short. I plan on naming a future daughter Esme, though it won't be short for anything, it will just be her name.
I also like Jade and though I don't like Coral, I do think Cora is nice.

Date: 2006-06-05 08:16 pm (UTC)Quebique Zyrkoniah ;)
I like Ruby (although it reminds me of the girl who died in Anne of Green Gables!). Pearl is nice, but I wouldn't use it for a first name. I like the idea of Opal, but I'm not too crazy about the way it sounds.
Fun post :)

Date: 2006-06-05 08:51 pm (UTC)I know someone who has a bunny named Pearl, so I don't think I could ever picture it as a baby name again.
I've always liked Jade.

Date: 2006-06-05 09:07 pm (UTC)I prefer Cora to Coral, though.
The others are a bit too over the top.

Date: 2006-06-05 09:16 pm (UTC)I know a little girl called Pearl but it still doesn't quite seem like a name.
Daaaance my Esmeralda
Date: 2006-06-05 09:29 pm (UTC)However, Hypothetical Daughter #1 will be named Mara Jade (not a double first name, also non-negotiable and Hypothetical Other Parent will just have to suck it), so I suppose I like the name Jade. Said child is being named after my favorite fictional character so the names come together, sort of a package deal.

Date: 2006-06-05 11:29 pm (UTC)I've always liked Ruby but I don't think I would give a child that name so maybe one day I will name a cat or dog that :p
I would like Jade except I knew a particularly obnoxious one when I was a teenager
Gemma is ok.
Margaret means "pearl"
Jasper is ok

Date: 2006-06-06 09:49 pm (UTC)And I do like Ruby. Pearl just sounds very grandmother-y to me. Esmeralda is pretty but it makes me think of the character from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Amethyst is interesting, but I wouldn't name my child that (I need something that my mother can pronounce with ease in Finnish).
