I used to think it should be stictly for a guy but lately have been warming up to it for a girl...

Since it's a last name, I don't really associate it with a particular gender.

Mostly I associate it with Carol Channing, so to me, it seems a little odd as a name for a child.

Actually, my younger sister's middle name is Channing. But I think it works for both a girl or a boy.

I'm surprised to see so many people saying they see it as a girl's name. The only Channing I've ever known of is Channing Tatum so I see it as a boy name, definitely. Though I have heard it much more often as the last name of women (i.e: Stockard Channing, Carol Channing) so I guess it could lean (a bit) toward being a girl's name.

when I first looked at it, I saw "canning" and immediately thought of the pickled beets I jsut made. I was wondering why it would be different to make canned goods for a boy or for a girl. then I realized what community this was and realized that's supposed to be a name.
