I think it's a really lovely name for a girl, and originally one I was considering. However, with Friends as popular as it was I think the name needs to be put on hiatus for a year or ten.

I would think boy because I've never heard of a Chandler besides the Friends one.

Boy. But I don't much like the name, despite liking the character best in Friends. It means candle-seller or candle-maker, and I really don't like occupational surnames used as first names.

I would expect most names ending in -er to be a boy, I suspect:
Jennifer, Amber, Heather, Hester, Esther vs Christopher, Abner, Ebenezer, Alexander, Jasper, Tyler/Spencer/Walker/Hunter/othersurnames... Thinkbabyname.com has 44 girls' names ending in -er (and some of those I'd consider boys names anyway) and 359 boys' names. I'd expect a girl's name that ended in that sound to be spelled with an a.

Actually I think 'eww pervy gym teacher in my high school' but umm yeah.

Really can't picture it on a girl.

I know a girl named Chandler and she's about 4 and a boy named Chandler and he's 14.

i think it's cute either way. but I think "Friends" has influenced ppl to think of it as a boy name.

It has all the hallmarks of a name that is in the process of "crossing over" from male to female, so if I were the sort of person who wanted my boy's name to be associated mainly with boys, I'd pass on this one.

(As a side note, the Friends character seemed neurotic and annoying enough that I wouldn't really want people to associate his traits with my kid. Perhaps I would have gained a new appreciation for him if I'd watched the show more often, though...?)

Ha, no, Chandler was actually one of the least annoying characters on Friends. Yes, neurotic, but realistically so and also a really loving, sensitive guy under it all.

BUT very, very often being called gay and bad with women - bad with everyone, really - so if you a have problem with those associations for your kid then, yeah, maybe it's not your best bet. He was my favourite character for sure, though!

Also, when Phoebe had those triplets for her brothers, remember they called one of the girls Chandler (originally thinking it was a boy) so I guess it works. For me it'll always be a name for a boy though.

I have seen it as both, but it's definitely a boys' name to me.

Two words: Friends. Bing.

Honestly, I think the Friends influence is still too strong to use it for either sex. Lots of people are just going to think "Chandler Bing, mister-boss-man bing", and make comments about it.

I'd use it for a boy, though, because it at least goes with the well known character.

Haha! When Phoebe is pregnant, she says, "what about Chandler for a girl?" Chandler says, "Uhhhh! Isn't Chandler kind of masculine?!?!" and Pheobe says, "eh...worked for you!"

LOL!!! That is a really funny episode!

I think of Chandler on Friends and Chandler, AZ, a city right next to where I live. I really don't like it as a persons name (because I'm used to it as a city)
