I don't understand how it's silly. I think it cuts back on confusion, and personally I would have hated to have an extremely common name, to be hearing it everywhere, to always have to go by my first name plus last initial, etc. I know some people don't mind, and I know the problems associated with having a really popular name aren't a big deal, but if I can avoid it, I will.

I always wished for a more uncommon name. It's still a pain in the butt, even though I'm not in school -- people usually get it mixed up with other names that were trendy when I was born, or don't remember it at all.
