Gideon is my favourite boys name :]

No offense, but it bugs when people spell Madeline like that and pronounce it Madelyn. Why not just cut to the chase and spell it Madelyn/Madalyn/Madilyn? It's not making it any more unique spelling it Madeline. She'd just have it misspronounced her whole life.

But I do love the name, and it saddens me to think it's getting so popular. =/

My cousin's name is Madeleine, but pronounced Madelyn, and it bugs me to the point that I spell it "Madelyn" in birthday cards and such. I'm so nice :]

Madeleine and Madeline aren't about being creative -- they actually happen to be the original spellings of the name (by original, i mean they preceed spellings like Madelyn/Madlyn/etc).

That being said, Madeline is the original spelling. True. But Madeline is pronounce "line" and therefor it's not the same as Madelyn.

Yay! This is the first time I've seen my own name on someone's list! That made me smile. =D

I never get this because I've always understood Madeline to be "line" at the end, and Madelyn being "lin" at the end. Hence why it's "MadeLINE". Hmmm. Same with Caroline/Carolyn. It bugs me.

I like Madeleine, too, but to me I hear that pronounced as Mada-lane.

I have a friend named Madeline and it's pronounced 'lin' at the end. I think it's fair to say you can pick which ending you want to use.

[identity profile] krosp.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
True, but at the same time you can avoid confusion by spelling it "line" for the pronunciation "line" and "lyn" for the pronunciation "lyn"...

But it is not a big deal, especially compared to some other names and their spellings.

I like Carys pronounced like ca-REESE. Katrien is very interesting, I haven't heard of it before but am coming to a new appreciation of Katherine-related names, so I think I quite like it. I like all your middle names.
I don't like Keely - it reminds me of someone keeling over with a stomach ache. I've met two dear little girls with this name, and even their cuteness didn't make me warm to the name.

Love Andrew... I really like Bennett too even though I wouldn't use it for personal reasons... Graham is very traditional but not so common, quite a strong name. No particular thoughts on the others

I can't use Bennett partially because I knew someone with that name, and partially because I think it would seem weird in my family to be giving someone a name that was a lastname unless it was a family name...if that makes sense. Otherwise, I like it on other people. It's probably not one of my absolute favourites anyway, so I guess I also wouldn't use it simply because I had preferred other names first. I just think it sounds nice, is a strong and masculine sort of name, has good associations, and isn't too common.

Bennett is my maiden name...I wish I LIKED it, because then I could use it. LOL.

Oh man I have liked Keely for a looong time, and I've never come across anyone else who liked it :) I doubt I'd ever use it, it sounds pretty trendy and like it could spike in popularity at any given moment, but it's def one of my guilty pleasure names.

Is Rei pronounced like Ray?

[identity profile] itcouldbelove.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I like that.
