I met a girl today, nineteen or twenty, named Bronwen, or Bronwyn (I only heard it). It reminds me of Lord of the Rings, but I've never heard it before. WDYT? And which spelling do you prefer?

I agree- I went to school with a bronwen and her family was of welsh background- I think her Dad might have actually emigrated from Wales.

I know a Bronwyn, and she really carries the name well. I like Branwen, with an a.

I prefer Bronwen; it's the more traditional spelling (in Welsh female names end in -wen, masculine names in -wyn), and I'm not a fan of y in a name anyway.
Either way I really like the name; pretty but strong too. It's fairly uncommon even in the UK but not completely made up or weird, so that's a good balance.

I hate anything -wen/wyn. It all sounds like elves to me.

I knew a girl with this name, but I forget which way she spelled it. I like both spellings, although I think I might like the E just the tiniest bit more.

I think a lot of Welsh, Cornish, and Gaelic names have been tarred with the LOTR brush, which is a shame.

ditto. prefer that spelling as well because it is more traditional. I love it for a MN.

I can't decide which spelling I like better, but I love the name. I'm not entirely sure that I'm crazy about the meaning (it's derived from Welsh cognates meaning something like "fair breast" or "white-breasted"...I kind of go back and forth between liking it and thinking it's ridiculous), but I think it's pretty.

I knew a Bronwyn who went by Winnie.
