(no subject)

I have a very close friend named Kathryn, but she goes by Katie and sometimes Kate. I would like to someday name my daughter after her, but I don't love the name Kathryn.

Do you have any ideas for other names that Katie/Kate could come out of? I thought for a while of Katrien, which is the Dutch form of Katherine. Do you think that'd be too weird considering I'm not Dutch? :) I absolutely love Katelyn but because of its popularity, I'm not incredibly keen on it.

I'd like to have a long first name so she has the option of going by something other than the nickname, but do you think it's possible to use Katie alone as a first name? Can you think of any middle names that go well with Katie?

Thanks for your opinions!

I really like the name Katrien and I don't think it's weird. It's unique, but still "normal" enough. Besides, with a nickname of Kate or Katie, it would pretty much be a nonissue. Another name you might consider is Katerina.

I have recently met someone with the name Kae and I think it is a beautiful name.

i know of a girl my age named katie. i'm unsure of her middle name.

...wasn't finished. i think it's something simple like lynn or anne... and i know of an older lady in her seventies or eighties named katey... so, i don't think it's weird and i rather like it as a name on it's own. i also like just plain kate as a first, as well. :D

Katie can go by itself.

But if you're not picking Katelyn because of the popularity, you might as well not use Katie at all. Nearly every Katelyn I know goes by Katie at some point in her life.

I have a friend who's really name is Katie. Katie Ann though.. not too exciting, but I'm sure a lot of middle names could fit.

Sure you can use Katie by itself, i hate it personally... it just really reminds me of a little girl and i don't think it works well past the age of 10. It brings spoilt brat to my mind :-/
But... thats just me!

I do, however like quite a lot of names that are other forms... (i'd use a C, not a K for most of these but since your friend is a K i suppose you'd want the K..) I don't think it's weird to use a name of another origin at all.

Kasia (kas-ee-uh) (slavic)
Katya
Katiana
Katarina, spanish, swedish, serbian, italian.. (italians also spell it Katerina)
Katriona (like Katelyn, this is also gaelic)
Kaitriona (like Katelyn, this is also gaelic)
Katrin (welsh)

Btw, Katrin is pronounced as it's spelt.. rather that Kat-reeen as someone suggested. Well, i suppose it could be both but i prefer it my way!!

I do think it's possible to use Katie as a first name, but I think that it would be kind of a childlike name for an adult to have- perhaps you could name her simply Kate and call her Katie?

My favorite Katie (that sounds like it should be the name of a book or a country song, heh) actually uses Katie as a nickname for Kathleen and I'm actually surprised that she's the only person I've ever heard do so. It seems to make perfect sense to me- it starts the same way as Katherine and is actually the Anglicized version of Caitlin anyway.

I have a friend named Katie Lynn.
Katie Elizabeth
Katie Paige (heehee, that's was what some people called me when I was little)

ok, I can think of lots. mostly longer middle names that go well after Katie. I think Katie has better possibilities than just Kate

I'm not sure why people associate the name Katie with a nickname- my name is Katie (middle name is Rose) and, while using Katie as a nickname is pretty common, I've met a good number of other Katie's whose real name is, in fact, Katie.

Then again, I've never liked the idea of trying to think of a longer name to work around a nickname- I don't really know anyone who's ever reverted back to using their full name. One of my closest friends is named Francesca, and now even her parents (who loved the name when they first picked it for her and swore that they would never let her use nicknames) call her Frankie, because Francesca was just too long to use normally.

What about Katrina?

I have a friend named Kathleen that goes by Katie.

My name is Kathryn Ann and I have gone by Katy all my life except for my grandmother who calls me Kathryn (old fashioned i suppose) Im in my 20s and I still go by Katy and I think it works. I wouldnt mind going by Kathryn either.

Our next door neighbor just had a baby and named her Katherine Elizabeth and they call her Katie Beth which I think is SOOO cute!

I think Kathleen Elizatbeth would be pretty but make sure you specify Katie as a nickname otherwise people might think Kathy as a nickname.

My middle name is Kate but for some reason at my college it got misspelled and now I pretend it is Kata. I like the way that would sound if it were Kayta.

This is so funny. I know a Katie Ann as well!

Katrien is a beautiful choice!

There's also Ekaterina, Katerina, Katya, Kathleen, Katrine, or Karina. I think Katie can stand on its own but it sounds a little cutsey.

I'm a 29-year-old Katherine who goes by Katie, and I always have except during middle school when I thought "Kate" was more mature-sounding. One of my familial nicknames is Katrina, and I love that. Katrien is similar enough without being the hurricane. :) It's a beautiful name - classical-sounding without being too common.

I love having a longer name and lots of nickname possibillities. A great-aunt Katherine went by Kitty.

Oh, and my middle name is Alexandra. Mom liked long names!

Well, my name is Portuguese (well, European anyhow!) "Catia Margarida" (or Margaret)

I hated it all my life because it was so uncommon- but I've really learned to love it the last few years!
