There are a few names I like for a boy, 2 of which are Spencer and Avery. However I keep running into people that tell me these are GIRL names. Really?

I've always thought they were boy names. What do you think?

Would it be completely outrageous for me to name my son Avery? I also love the name Sheldon, but everyone says it's super geeky.

I know so many amazing guys with that name though!

Oh...

Sheldon reminds me of the egg with legs cartoon character from the Garfield and Friends clips. There was the duck with the inner tube and the egg. He was cute. :)

I always thought Spencer and Avery were boy names (though Avery could be either/or maybe?) but I like it for a boy as well.
Sheldon I just don't like at all, it seems geeky to me too...but I mean, to each their own!!

Avery can be both, I personally think of it as more feminine but it's originally a male name, I believe, kind of like Ashley once was. Someone else in here recently decided on Avery for her baby boy's name choice I think.

I've never heard of a female Spencer. I've known only guys with the name and very much consider it masculine. I really like this name.

Sheldon sounds geeky to me too, sorry, but if you really like it, wouldn't be so bad as a middle name. I like the combo Spencer Avery, and then Spencer Sheldon is okay, though it's two two-syllable S names that are both kinda geeky.

i would say that avery is a unisex name. i am not a fan, but i know both boys and girls named that. it seems more like a feminine name to me.

spencer is definitely a boys name.

if you love sheldon, go with it! :)

They are NOT girl names.

Spencer is all boy. It's been hijacked to be used on girls, but I still consider it all boy.

Avery is unisex, but I hate it on girls; I like it on boys, though.

The first time I ever saw Spencer on a girl is when The-N debuted South of Nowhere. After that, I began seeing female Spencers popping up.

I saw somewhere that a celebrity couple had named their daughter Spencer. Now, I don't remember who they are, but the kid was born way before South of Nowhere came along.

I've also heard about Spencer being used on girls in other occasions, but South of Nowhere was definitely the first time I heard it being used on a girl too :)

I see Avery as a boys' name because of Charlotte's Web.

I agree with this!! :) to the OP: I could possibly see it used on a girl, though. As for Spencer, I could never see that on a girl. Just seems too masculine to me. And Sheldon - yes, I do tend to see it as a geeky name, but it's not too bad. I know two Sheldon's - one is my roommate's cousin who yes, is admittedly, a bit of a nerd :P and the other is a little boy I haven't seen for a few years (I think he's 6 now) so yeah. :P

Avery is masculine, although it has apparently recently become unisex. Also, he's Fern's brother in Charlotte's Web.

I think Spencer is decidedly masculine.

I think they're considered unisex now. At least, more girls are starting to pop up with those names. Screw that, Spencer is a boy's name, dammit! Also one of my favorites. Avery always seemed kind of feminine to me, but I don't think it would be any stranger than naming your son Addison or Morgan.

On a sidenote, I like Sheldon, too, but I also think it sounds extremely geeky. For me, I think it's because of those SNL sketches with the high school news show where Rachel Dratch (I think) played a dorky guy named Sheldon. No matter how much I like the name, I just can't shake that image.

spencer is a boys name to me, the only girl spencer i've ever known of was a character on a tv show.

avery is a girls name to me, but it could go either way i guess. i don't think it'd be outrageous to use on a boy because it is becoming more common for boys as i've noticed.

I actually have met a girl named Spencer. She was in my sister's dance class many years ago, so that would make her about 17/18 now. She went by Spenci. I totally consider it strictly a boy's name though. It just doesn't work on a girl.

Avery, I think could go either way. I have known many children with the name Avery, both boys and girls. I like it a little more on a boy, but don't hate it on a girl.

As far as Sheldon...sorry, it does sound a little nerdy to me! For some reason I keep picturing a little cartoon turtle with glasses...maybe it was in a book I used to read as a kid?? I don't know, I have a strange memory. LoL

Oh! I think that the character on the animated Disney version of Robin Hood - the timid turtle with glasses - IS named Sheldon!

Spencer is totally a guy's name to me.

My coworker named her son Avery, so I totally think of that as a boy's name too.

As for Sheldon, I keep picturing the character from Big Bang Theory. And, yes, he is a big geek. I like geeks though!

Big Bang Theory was the first thing I thought of, too :D

I can't picture Spencer on a girl at all. I know Avery has become more unisex, but I prefer it on a boy.

I think they are both unisex. It wouldn't be outrageous to name a boy either of these, although I do think Avery has a little more feminine edge to it.

My sister's name is spencer actually and it really suits her. However it still seems like more of a boy's name to me. I love the nickname Spence!

Spencer is totally a boys name. And once upon a time, Avery was too. I know an Avery, age 21, a punk rock dude, and its ironic that his name is now being used for frilly girl things.

Sheldon is totally awesome, haters to the left.

For me, they are both boys names- Spencer especially. I love that name. In fact, my husband and I recently talked about it, and if we have another boy, our top contender is Spencer Alexander.

I've met a little girl named Spenser. Avery is more of a girl's name to me.

both are boys' names. Avery could go either way, and althought it's more a boys' name to me I can still see it going either way. Spencer is a boys' name and it being used on a girl IMO, is just another boys' name on a girl

Spencer is traditionally a male name--it just came into feminine usage after a female character named Spencer on the TV show South of Nowhere. I still think of it as masculine only.

Avery is now unisex, but for me personally I wouldn't give it to a girl.

Sheldon is...meh, but not horrible, either.

Hubby and I are TTC #2 and if we have a boy, I'm naming him Avery. :) I was going to use that for a girl as well but I like Avery more on a boy.

And I know a little boy named Avery who is the cutest thing ever.

Avery is unisex. I have it my girl and my boy list. Spencer is a boy's name, but I've seen it on girls. It is a boy's name though.

Sheldon is only super geeky because of The Big Bang Theory.

Sheldon?

Have you ever seen When Harry Met Sally?
Harry: With whom did you have this great sex?
Sally: I'm not going to tell you that!
    Harry: Fine, don't tell me.
    Sally (considering): Shel Gordon.
Harry: Shel? Sheldon? No, no, you didn't have great sex with ... Sheldon.
    Sally: I did too.
Harry: No you didn't. A Sheldon can do your income taxes. If you need a root canal, Sheldon's your man, but humping and pumping are not Sheldon's strong suits. It's the name. Do it to me, 'Sheldon'. You're an animal, 'Sheldon'. Ride me big, 'Sheldon'. - Doesn't work.

And then comes this exchange...

I'm with you on this one. I can't stand seeing the name Avery on girls, because in my book, they are totally masculine. And even if they are unisex, try them on a guy anyway. Who says girls get to have all of the unisex names, anyway? I prefer Morgan on a guy anyhow, hmph... And I'm in the severe minority, but I love, love, LOVE Elinor (nn Ellie) on a guy.

Sheldon is cute!

Spencer is masculine to me, and Avery could go either way. I used to think Sheldon was a dorky name but I know two adult Sheldons who are both pretty cool guys.

Spencer is definitely a boy name to me. Avery I can see on either, but prefer on boys. Sheldon is ok. Not something I'd use. He could always go by Don if he doesn't like his name. :)

I have seen Avery on boys AND girls. But I would NEVER use Spencer on a girl. It's definitely a boy's name in my book.

And I like Sheldon. Geeky or not. :o)

I don't think it would be a big deal at all. I like Avery sooo much better for boys. Spencer is definitely a boy's name.

I don't think Sheldon is geeky, and either way...what's wrong with geeky?

Avery I'm kind of wishy washy on, but I think I prefer it on a girl. Spencer is DEFINITELY a BOYS name!

*bemused* To me Spencer and Avery are surnames. I have a hard time thinking of them as given names for either sex.
