[identity profile] gothikbutterfly.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My husband and I are planning on naming our son (who is due today, by the way) Chasval, and we haven't really decided on a middle name. My husband and I both like the names Hadrian and Gerik, but we're not sure which sounds better... Or if a different name would be better. So which do you think sounds better?

Chasval Hadrian
Chasval Gerik

And, in case you're not sure, Chasval is pronounced [caz-vall] and we've been pronouncing Gerik [ger-ick], rhyming with Derrek (however it's spelled).

I know Chasval is a very odd name, but when I first heard it, it just felt right. It's a name from an old Gundam series, so, I didn't make it up.

Any thoughts? Negative and positive are both wanted! Thanks!

[I'm sorry if my post seems rushed... I'm not very good at getting my ideas out proper today...]

To me, Chasval looks like it should be pronounced "Chaz-val", because of Charlie, Chaz, etc. It's definitely different.

Good luck with the baby! Those last few days are killer, I remember.

I'm sorry, but I don't like it one bit. I think your child in the future will have problems with that name.

But good luck with the babe. :)

The name just seems you're trying way too hard to be unique. As you're about to give birth and all, I doubt you're up for changing your mind, but it's just not a good name. I don't like how it sounds, or the spelling :/ I prefer Hadrian over Gerik anyday. I think Hadrian would make an excellent first name, and perhaps Chazval or however it's spelled as a middle name? Though, I'm not sure why I bother suggesting, you're probably set on it. Good luck with the baby, have a happy labor!

Yeah, so people don't like it, and I am one of them, but objectively I think it's okay. It's strange (my opinion) but has sort of an Old World feeling which to me makes it "acceptable". Like people seeing it aren't going to think, "crazy parents," but rather assume that it must be an old/foreign/family name.

To further that "deception", and also because of personal taste, I would pick Hadrian over Gerik for the middle name.

Chasval is way too out there.

I think Gerik or Hadrian would be better as a first name. He might have to correct people thinking it's Derek or Adrian but neither of them are as bizarre as Chasval.

Gerik Chasval
Gerik Hadrian
Hadrian Gerik
Hadrian Chasval

Sheesh you people. Can we be honest without being mean? When I MEET someone with an odd name, I don't immediately insult his parents.

I think the name is quite odd, and because of that would urge to to consider dropping the H, so that at least people will pronounce it correctly. Without the H it can't really be mispronounced, although it's unique. Easily he could have a NN Caz, which is cute to me.

Casval Gerik is not evil (Flannigan), dumb (Nevaeh!) or absurd (Emagin Agia). It's different. And I agree with an above poster that it sounds Old Worldy or bookish.

On the other hand, I HATE HATE HATE Hadrian, as it makes me think of Hades.

I like the way it sounds a lot! I just don't like the way it looks. Chasval...something looks off! Maybe Casval? That reminds me of gladiators and Julius Caeser and nobility.

I like Chasval/Casval Gerik, or Hadrian Chasval/Casval.

I like Chasval, though I agree that spelling it Casval would be less confusing spelling-wise. I also like Hadrian, but I'm afraid that most people would mistake it for Adrian. Gerik is just a cool name in general. Whatever you choose, I wish you the best of luck. Congrats! :)

I like Chasval Hadrian better. And I think that you should name your child what YOU want, what you feel is right. I may not like the name and it may be difficult for your child, but what I think doesn't matter. He's your son, it's your choice. Stick to it. :)

I don't really know what Gundam is...a videogame? I'm not usually a fan of videogame names, but I think Chasval is a good one. It reminds me of "Chivalry". Dropping the "h" will make it more easy to pronounce, but I also think it gives the look of the name more character. I prefer Hadrian over Gerik, I think it looks more refined.

I really don't like it at all. :( I don't like how it looks (or sounds..), and spelling it Chasval but pronouncing it Casval only makes it worse. But if you're really set on it, I'd recommend giving him a more common middle name. Hadrian and Gerik are both really out there, IMO. Especially Gerik. Sorry, I just agree with most of the other posters that said your son will likely have an awful time with this name. There are ways of getting around giving him a common name without being this extreme.

Way too much for me... I think it's awful... BUT, it's your baby, so I won't rain on your parade.

Why not consider it for a middle name?

I know you said that and your husband both hated your really common names, but don't you think that you're inflicting the same thing on your child only vice versa? Why not pick a name that's uncommon but not so much that you have everyone tilting their heads saying "Whaaa...??"

I love the name. My guy is a big Gundam fan and he loved it too. I like different names and think that it's completely YOU and your HUBBY'S choice to name YOUR kids whatever you want. My name is Aymen Teresa but I've gone by Teresa since I was of school age, because my mother's 'friends' and my k-1 teacher told my mom my name would make my life difficult. I wish they'd minded their own business because I LOVE my first name and would rather be called Aymen than Teresa anyday!!

I hate when people tell me "you were better off and didn't suffer with the name Teresa. You would have gotten picked on big time." How do they know?! Who gives them the right to predict MY future? Every kid will eventually face some kind of teasing in school. If it's not your name, it's your red hair or freckles. I wore glasses and they picked on me for that?! I have names picked out for my future kids (if God grants them to me) and they are uncommon also, and I don't really care what people say, because the people who matter in my life will accept any name I give my children. At least now, 30 years later, my Mom knows SHE named me the name she adored, and not some generic name they forced on her.

Good luck Honey! Hope the name you and your Hubby chose is the one you both truly love :)

It's been my experience that having to attach a pronounciation guide with a name means the name is probably a bad idea.
Chasval isn't the worst name I've ever heard.. it's no MyyLove or Messyah.
I think it would be much better suited in the middle name slot, along with Gerik.

I really really really like the name, but it is very unique, and for that reason, I'd suggest maybe giving a more common name for a MN. Your son might really appreciate the uniquness, but then again, he might really hope someday that he'd been a Bobby or a Jimmy.

I don't really like Chasvel in my opinion, but it's ok if you name your kid that. Personally I like Hadrian Gerik much better.

Well, when he gets old enough, if he didn't like his name, he could change it, as my husband did. His name was Ferdinand. His nickname was Ryan, and that's what he changed it to. *shrugs*
