Social Security's Top 1000 Names for 2005

For your viewing pleasure. Or in my case, horror. My daughter's name, Lily, has jumped to #39!! Nobody was naming their daughter Lily back in 1996! I thought I was giving my child a lovely, unusual name. Argh. ;)

*EDIT* Just page down and select Top 1000 under Popularity.

Thoughts? Surprises? Comments?

The link isn't working for me =/

It isn't working for me, either.

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Blame Harry Potter?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/-glass-/ 2006-05-13 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
nah. harry is 526, and he's the main character!

a lot of names were repeated, only with crappy spellings. woohoo?

who names their kid aryan? or german? or messiah? rohan is kind of ew, as well. dylan was 60 for a girl? that is such a masculine name. that's stupid.

my name is now 986.

lucille has been a favorite of mine for a while and it's been increasing over the years. it's still low, but getting higher. 914. and astrid was 931?

i hope they stay that low until i get to have kids. =\

[identity profile] jessiac.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
That low? Harry's no 5 (if I remember correctly - definitely in the top ten) in the UK!

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW, "Aryan" is the WORST alternative spelling ever. How ignorant.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
I just realized. For Aaron? I couldn't even figure it out for a while!

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I was actually thinking of it as an alternative spelling for "Arien," but now that you mention "Aaron" it occurs to me that that's not so much a popular name. It's a Tolkien creation. So...alternative spelling or not, it's still ignorant.

[identity profile] neroli.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm betting that's not German (JER-mun), but Germán (her-MAN, where the h is kind of like the ch sound in "ach"), which is used in Spanish-speaking places.

Rohan is a name used in India, but it's hard to tell how many of the parents may have been influenced by Lord of the Rings.

[identity profile] neroli.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, her-MAHN.

[identity profile] trissyd.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That reminds me of a consealour I had back in the day when I went to camp... she was my age now (20), and her name was "Hannah"... she knew of NO ONE her age with that name but then it came back as a HUGE name for babies... must be annoying!

[identity profile] trissyd.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, and response:

My boyfriend is pissed that his name (Kai) is now #239... haha!
(Mine's in the 700's, I'm OK with that)

[identity profile] maude.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
My name, Erin, is #112...agh! And my brother's name, Andrew, is #6. Oh well. :[

[identity profile] colin-chaotic.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
My name is 660, or 40 if you want to spell it right. And I... don't care either way! Bwaha.

I love going down to the very bottom, and seeing some of the seriously WTF? names on there. Montserrat, for instance, or Keyshawn. Or Jax. Or Eliseo. Also, it's seriously depressing to do a page search for "Lee" on there, because you get about twenty girls names that are "Kylee" or "Rylee" or something equally stupid.

[identity profile] neroli.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Montserrat is a name used in Spain. (A famous bearer is Montserrat Caballé, the operatic soprano.) If I remember correctly, the name is a reference to a place with some religious significance.

[identity profile] lovablemess.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised my name was #68.
I'm surprised Samantha is still that popular. I thought it was primarily an 80's, early 90's name.
I'm not surprised that my brother's name is #3. He's always in the top 5, it just moves around a little.

[identity profile] lavandersparkle.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
My name Josie is #319

[identity profile] sarahrose.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Not toooo surprised! I was surprised at Ava being top 10 and Heather being 300. Little things like that. Not very pleased, but not very surprised. Ha, at least Sarah is dropping. :-D

[identity profile] bellisima87.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
my name is #327.. so it got pretty popular because before the year of 1995 it wasn't even in the top 1,000.

[identity profile] krosp.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I was surprised to see Nevaeh on there at all, let alone in 70th place. I hadn't heard of that name apart from on forums; I don't know if it has found its way here to Australia yet.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
such a ridiculous name. Of course my future daughter's best friend is going to be this poor child, and I will have to call her that, even though I am still unsure how to pronounce it.

I think Heaven is a less ridiculous name. My friend wrote a story and the girl was Heaven Leigh. It sounds corny, and it is, but it's not as bad!

[identity profile] pearshateraqui.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's hilarious that Mikayla and Makayla are that high up, yet Michaela, which I consider the proper spelling and so much more elegant, hangs limply at #284

That's as far as I've gotten. Not found my name yet.

[identity profile] pearshateraqui.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Aha, my real name has dropped 27 places since last year. :D It's quite low down now. My adopted name of Evangeline is ... not found. XDD I thought it might have become more popular since Lost started, but oh well.

My two really liking names at the minute, Lorelei and Magdalena, are at 802 and 813 respectively. :) That's pretty good then.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 07:55 am (UTC)(link)

Some that caught my attention:
Ava- 9, not a surprise because i think it was obvious it was gaining popularity, but it's such a pretty name, too bad.
Sophia-11- steadily gained popularity over the past couple of years... i think it will make top 10 next year.
Neveah-70 I can't believe this one!! awful!!
Violet-375- think this will get higher next year too.
Madisyn-379/madyson443/Madison-3.. wtf? these first two spellings are terrible.
Zoie-567- had to call this one up on spelling too... ick.

The boys names are boring...
Angel and 32 for a boy... what!!?
& i noticed Jesus & Mary both tie at 73...hehhee

My favourites
Amelia- 84 :-(
Anais- 947, nice and low...
Felicity- 690
Juliet- 587
Anabelle- 891 (though Annabelle is 238 & Annabel is 776)

Ophelia (think it's taking over as favourite from Amelia!) & Esmé are nowhere. yayness.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Angel is a very masculine name in Hispanic countries. It's not a girl's name where it originated.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
I know, but i'm surprised it's been adopted by of other communities for boys...(i assume since it's so high, it's not just hispanic babies being given the name) i tend to think of it as quite a tacky name for girls...
I do know of a caucasian 'Angel'- blonde haired and blue eyed, i suppose the name fits rather well! But i've always thought it was an extremely weird name choice on his parents part.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Tacky for girls yes! Maybe as a nn...maybe.

[identity profile] elemmennope.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, Lily was climbing steadily starting in the late 70s.

2005 39
2004 52
2003 69
2002 79
2001 103
2000 124
1999 152
1998 169
1997 219
1996 261
1995 319
1994 392
1993 452
1992 471
1991 504
1990 585
1989 544
1988 549
1987 626
1986 635
1985 717
1984 737
1983 776
1982 786
1981 747
1980 849
1979 966

I guess it's always hard to know how much higher a name will go though. But looking at the movement trends of the last few years is just as, if not more important, than the ranking of any single given year.

[identity profile] scottish-diva.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
haha i didn't see Kade on there at ALL.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's #415

[identity profile] scintillated.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My name is #353, down from #330 in '04. I hope it continues to go downward, because I'll be damned if my name and "trendy" are used in the same sentence! Then again, there was a chick on American Idol with my name, so it might go up in popularity...booo.

Anyways, that list was kinda depressing. I just saw a ton of misspelled names (Makaila?!?!), a lot of those annoying "aden" names, and a ton of names ending in "lyn" (Kaelyn? Jaelyn??? What??). And what was up with the multiple spellings of Cadence, Cameron, and Madison?

[identity profile] solyma.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
it still make me very sad that my favorite boy name, ethan, is gaining so much popularity. #5. :( i've loved that name since i was 5 years old. i'm bitter!

[identity profile] wykd-faerie.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
at least my name has decided to drop.It is now 24. when I was born there was like NO ONE named Taylor and now it's still up near the top.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
My name (Rosalie) isn't on there at all, but Rose is #333. That's not too bad.

Hehe hubby's name is #9

Here's my TOP names list, in MY order, with the SS rankings. I'm putting this entry in memories, so it's mostly for me. :)

Lenora - NOT there! Nora is 277
Katelynn - 296
Madison - 3 hehe!
Addison - 107 (right by Ashton...interesting!)
Isabel - 89 (I saw Isabell. That is horrible.)
Corrina - NOT there! Carina is #742, but it sounds different to me.

Boys (Middle name Christopher or Matthew)
Austin - 37 this is my husband's favorite name. *sigh*
Cameron - 52
Dominic - 85
Asher - 288
Luke - 41
Emanuel - 268

Am starting to question my boy choices. LOL

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same, i have a lot of girls names in the top 100ish...a couple not there at all, but all my boy names are really high!
I love Isabelle <-- french spelling, it's so pretty.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Hispanic names, so that's why I chose Isabel. I think Isabelle is better than Isabell though. It looks like a mistake...too many letters or too few.

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm searching for my favorite names on the list, starting with Mara. And I learn that "Samara" is #381. And isn't that the CREEPY ASS little girl from The Ring? GREAT NAME CHOICE. "Hey, I'm going to name my daughter after that creepy possessed parent-killing murdering girl who crawls through TVs to kill people! ROCK ON! I am so hardcore."

AHEM, anyways. Mara is #670. Alice is #414 and Lacy is #959 while Lacey is #441. Owen is #60, Henry is #103, Harry is #526. My other favorite names, not including middle names, aren't on there.

These are good numbers for me! Considering my own name is #36 now (and was also 36 the year I was born), and topped out #25 - I think that's the rank range I want to avoid. It was so annoying to always be one of 5 Kate/Katie/Katherines in any class. I hope Owen doesn't rise too much in the next 10-15 years.

[identity profile] k-t-bug.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
How weird! My name is Katherine (Katie) and Mara and Alice are both on my Girly list!

I actually like Samara, but I never saw The Ring so does that make it okay? :)
