(no subject)

I told my cousin of your reactions to the name Shoshana Carleigh, and she now sees that Carleigh is a bit much with that spelling (That was the part of the name I disliked, not the Shoshana).
So we were thinking of Leigh names, and we came up with-

Cayleigh/Kayleigh/Caleigh/Kaleigh
Ainsleigh
Ashleigh
Kyleigh/Kileigh
Ryleigh/Rileigh

Some of these, I agree with what most of you are likely to say: The spelling looks terrible!

Opinions?

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
i despise all of those, most are actually worse than carleigh, in my opinion. how about shoshana leigh?

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
its pretty, imo. i hope she finds something that she really likes (and you too). :)

[identity profile] dellswife.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I TOTALLY AGREE, I Love just Leigh:)

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. I suggested Leigh in the last post! The only one I don't mind is Ashleigh.

[identity profile] imyourrapunzel.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the best ones are Ryleigh, Kyleigh and Kayleigh, they look the most familiar/easy to pronounce. I'm not really a fan of -leigh names though. Leigh by itself is fine. Why not Shoshana Leigh?

[identity profile] tinylittlestars.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ashleigh is the best one out of those, although I like the suggestions above of just using Leigh ;)

[identity profile] solyma.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
ditto :D

[identity profile] krosp.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think Ashleigh looks ok, except you don't want another "sh" sound after Shoshana as a first name!

[identity profile] tinylittlestars.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair point - I didn't even think of that...

[identity profile] maude.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I STRONGLY agree with [livejournal.com profile] arbus - Shoshana Leigh is beautiful! As for all those other -leighs...I can't really say the same. :\

[identity profile] dancing-crazy.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not just use Leigh? Anything else looks really forced.

[identity profile] turabiannights.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Leigh is much better than any of these, in my opinion.

[identity profile] elemmennope.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the Car part of Carleigh I'm opposed to, it's the -leigh. So other -leigh names aren't an improvement imo. Actually, I prefer Carleigh to any of these others.

[identity profile] fingie.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
I second that

[identity profile] trissyd.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with everyone else, just "Shoshanna Leigh" sounds a lot more elegant than tacking on something else to the beginning to the "Leigh"...

Just for fun, I know 3 Kaleigh's in real life...

1) Kaylee
2) Kaleigh
3) Kaeleigh (why so many letters? it's a task to teach people to spell her name)

I'm not a fan of funky spellings... and all of those look like they should have a "lee" or a "ly" at the end, NOT a "leigh"... that's just my opinion, though.

[identity profile] so-there.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
how about kailleah? or kayle? it seems everyone spells it something different...

[identity profile] scintillated.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't forget Kaley, Kayli, Kaylie, Kayley... ;)

[identity profile] shyloh.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a Keilih (pronounced Kay-lee). I'm also not a big fan of funky spellings.

[identity profile] morphinae.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I thought she was spelling it that way to honor her mother or something? It's not like she made it up off the top of her head or something, it's not that terrible. Honestly I don't see why you're giving her such a hard time, it's her baby, and the name isn't terrible. The child won't be scarred for life. It's unlikely you'll sway her if she's made a decision anyway, she'll probably just start resenting the 'input' after a while. I definitely would, if my teenage (i'm guessing here) cousin kept trying to talk me out of what *I* wanted to name my own baby, I'd get pretty damn pissed. Besides, there's little difference between adding a Car- to leigh then adding an Ain-, Carly spelled anyway is a cute name.

Just let it go?

[identity profile] thunderofsins.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
ditto...

[identity profile] ewaeva.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, enough already. First name's awesome, middle name's fine and JUST A MIDDLE NAME. And besides, it's her child and if I were your cousin, I'd find this annoying and intrusive as hell.

[identity profile] shyloh.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Not crazy about it spelled like Karli...

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I really like "Shoshana Leigh" but my favorite from the list is Aisnleigh. Except, as it's usually spelled "Ainsley" I think it's actually pronounced "Ains-lee", not "Ains-lay", so I'm not sure that really works.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Leigh is an alternative spelling for Lee. So it would be Ainsley.

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really as simple as just an alternative spelling, "Leigh" is also commonly pronounced "Lay", which is arguably a more correct pronounciation than "Lee" (with the "ei"). While some people may use it as an alternative spelling and expect to be called "Lee", most people who see the name "Leigh" are going to say "Lay."

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. i before e except after c or when sounding like A as in neighbor or weigh... it should be pronounced lay and Im done singing grade school songs. heh :)

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
This is totally unrelated but I am starting to feel so cheated on grade school songs. It's like everyone in the world learned a better version than I did! I learned "I before e except after C, and when sounding like A it goes the other weigh." How lame and (comparatively) not informative.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL...yes I heard as in neighbor and weigh.

It might look like Lay, and I too read it that way in my head, but I know about 5 people with the middle name Leigh, and it's Lee.

I know a Robin Leigh, Noa Leigh, Heather Leigh and a Ryan Leigh. All guys except Heather. Interesting!!!

ok so 4. That's a lot to me!

[identity profile] lostrocket.livejournal.com 2006-05-12 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think those four people have neglectful parents.

In all seriousness, "Lay" the correct pronounciation, going by the spelling. So I would say the parents of those four people fell victim to contemporary disregard for the correlation between spelling and pronounciation, just like half the country. Oh well.

[identity profile] thunderofsins.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
I like Carleigh more than any of those. And seriously, if you were my cousin I'd probably have punched you by now and not talked to you about the baby or names again until the baby was born and named.

[identity profile] sherball.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
The only one I like.. is Kayleigh. The rest are just awful on the eyes. :)

[identity profile] so-there.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
what's wrong with just plain carly?

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't think any of those -leigh names go with Shoshana at all. What about just regular old Leigh?

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
okay I see a million people already suggested that, lol.

[identity profile] smasharash.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Of those I like Ashleigh and Kayleigh

[identity profile] scintillated.livejournal.com 2006-05-11 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
In my opinion, those spellings are pretty bad.

She should just stick with Leigh.

[identity profile] home-to-me.livejournal.com 2006-05-12 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I know of a girl named Ashleigh, and I thought that was really neat the first time I ever heard/saw it. This girl is my age though (22), so not necessarily part of the "let's spell names wrong on purpose" trend that tends to be going around now. It's the only one on the list that I think looks nice at all. The other look ridiculous, IMO

[identity profile] whisperthewords.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think just Shoshana Leigh would be lovely.

[identity profile] lavandersparkle.livejournal.com 2006-05-13 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
I really Kayleigh, or just Leigh would be pretty.
