I love the name. The painter that painted our house (we had it custom built) has a young daughter named India, and I've loved it since he told us her name. ♥
I don't hate it, but I don't love it, either. I know a family with two kids - a girl named India and a boy named Elijah. I love Elijah, but I've always thought India was a little odd.
I don't like it much... but I never really liked place names much. In my personal opinion it'd be the same as calling my daughter something like Australia ;)
Having said that - if I met a girl called India it really wouldn't strike me odd.
India, before the name of a country, was the Sanskrit word for "river", which the name for the country originated from :) I love both sound and meaning, I think it's fine on a white girl, it would actually be more of a pun on girl from India.
I don't really dislike it; I don't think that I'd ever use it, though. It's pretty. I don't think that you really need a connection to the country, you'd just use it because you like the name. And no, I don't think it'd be too awkward at all.
I think what I can't get around is how well it would (or wouldn't) age. I can picture it on a teenager, and a young adult. Other than that, not so much.
I love it, because I love the way it sounds, but I'd be kind of hesitant about using it, since I have no connection to the country, and obviously the association with the country is about as strong as you can get.
