[identity profile] todaydream.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
There are a lot of people "around me" giving birth right now. A friend just told me that her cousin had a baby. The name? Alexander Robin. Could've been worse, but it's not my style. So we chatted about the baby a bit, and then my friend suddenly said: "Oh, have I told you yet that the baby is a girl?"
I was all like: "NO WAY that kid's a girl, who would name a girl Alexander?"

But apparently, her cousin did, so she could nickname her 'Alex'. Why she didn't just use Alexandra is beyond me.

what a stupid thing to name a little girl. alexander is for boys, alexandra is for girls, obviously she was misinformed!

Should have just named her Alex. I don't get why people give these long names to their kids when they KNOW they are going to call them something completely different. I know it's common, but it's just not my thing, I guess.

Also could have named her Alexa. Alexa Robin actually sounds decent.

There I'd have to disagree with you. I think the longer name is there in case the kid wants to go by that later instead of the nickname.
Once I was chatting with my parents about what they almost named me instead of the name I have now, and they were like, "Oh, we liked Vicki..." And I was like, "Oh Victoria's nice" and they said, "No.. it would have just been 'Vicki'. But with an i, not a y!" VOMIT. If they'd named me "Vicki" without the option of Victoria, I would have been very very angry.
That being said, it's a moot point here because Alexander is ridiculous on a girl.

Eh, okay. You've got a point there. I know a girl named Francesca nn Chessie, but I doubt she'll be going by Chessie when she's 30.

even Alexis would have worked nicely in my opinion. But i'm still shaking my head at this whole thing

WHAT???

I would love that name on a boy. But girls should be Alexandra. WTF.

Personally, I love it.

I tend to hate girls names that end with "A", so yeah. 'Alexandra' is not my style. She'll likely end up just going by Alex or whatever, so I don't see the big deal. I've always love love LOVED more masculine nicknames for girls anyhow. George, Charlie, Alex, Ryan, etc etc.

While I'm not a fan of boys names on girls, I can accept it and appreciate what you're saying about why you would like that as a name... the thing that makes me not like this name is that the middle name is so unisex (and from the ones I know, Robin usually seems to be male spelling too) that everyone will automatically assume she is a boy. I just think that if people want to name their girl a boys' name, then fine- but please give the rest of us a clue that it's actually a girl in the middle name, or it will cause a lot of hassle. Even Alexander Robyn would be ---slightly--- better imho

At least they could have given her a distinctly feminine middle name to offset it. I personally love Alexandra, but whatever floats your boat.

When I first read the name, I was like, "god, Robin sounds so girly on boys." And Alexander obviously sounds so masculine on girls. Wow. That is so weird. Like, how did she think that that was a good idea? Has she never heard the name Alexandra before?

I've decided that Robin sounds too feminine on boys and too masculine on girls. Apparently, I don't like it on anybody.

I actually like the name, but it sounds a bit old and wimpy on boys, and too middle-aged on girls. So I don't like it on anybody either, even though I like the way it sounds.

Well, you could either name her Alexandra or Alex, and that would solve the problem, but... no. Had to go with Alexander? That's irritating.

I suppose someone has to be the first with any boy's-name-going-feminine... but no, don't like it.

See, I don't mind boys names on girls - being a girl called Steve, it's never really been that big a deal. But then my mother named me that because she really liked the name, as opposed to wanting a weird name - I would have been Stephen if I'd been a boy. And even though It's not had a huge negative impact on my life, there are times when it's been a bit inconvient to have everyone assume you're a man. So I don't see why you would choose a distinctly masculine name, with a unisex middle name especially, when there is an alternative female version that wouldn't effect what you call a kid day to day. If she wanted a little girl named Alex, she could've caused her daughter a lot less hassle and still done that.

Alexa, Alexis, Alexandra, Alexandria... why did she have to go with the boy's name?
