What are possibile nicknames for Joshua? (besides Josh)
Does Joey sound reasonable, considering here in Italy it would be pronounced JAW-ee, not JOE-ee? That way it shares the same sound as Joshua.

What nicknames can you think of? No matter how out there, I'd like to hear it
And what did/do the Joshua's you know go by? :)

TIA!

Jos is the only other nickname I can think of. All of the Joshuas I know go by Josh or Joshua.

I didn't think of that one. Joss like Joss Whedon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_Whedon).

This is not a serious suggestion, but I guess Osha (http://www.osha.gov) (long o sound) could be a nickname for Joshua. :)

I've never met a Joshua who went by anything other than Josh or Joshua.

Joe(y) could work, though. It'd be a stretch, but no more than nicknames like Meg for Margaret (or Peg, which I STILL don't get) or Hank for Henry. I mean, at least the letters are kind of there.

Margaret gets shortened to Marg, with a hard G.

R drops out really easily in a lot of accents, so that gives us Mag (MAHG).

The vowel flatens out to an EH sound--Meg.

Finally, M is a labial--pronounced with the lips--just like P, so M morphs to P--Peg.

I'm afraid I can't explain Henry-to-Hank like that. :-P

To be fair, Meg has been a nick-name for Margaret since the 1300s or so, whereas I've never seen Joe used as a nick-name for Joshua.

I knew a Joshua who went by Jos (JAHS). One nickname the little guy could grow out of quickly would be Joshie.

My husband goes by Josh.

But because his dads name is Joe, they call him Little Joe sometimes.

I dunno why but a lot of people who go by initials include a J. If it works well with their middle or last name.

Jasha, sounds like Sasha, as in "Saw-sha".

And, long ago I found the name Ossian in the dictionary, and from it I made the name Ozzian, with my own, different prn. "Oz-zhun", and I cam up with the nick names Oz/Ozzy. I mention all this because "Oz-zhun" to me sort of has the same sound as Joshua, so maybe the nick name Oz, or Ozzy could work for it too?
