How do you pronounce Leah?

A friend of mine just had a baby and named her Leah. Hubby and I thought it was pronounced different ways. I eventually asked her how she was pronouncing it. So I was just curious on how everyone else pronounces it :)

The way I've always heard it pronounced, and the way it's "supposed to be" pronounced: Lee-uh

I know a Leah (Lee-AH), but I also know someone who pronounces it "Lee" (which I think is dumb).

I know some who pronounce it Lee-ah and some who pronounce it Lay-ah. I think I like the Lay-ah sound better, but I would spell it differently (Lea, Leia) if I were to use it.

That is soooo interesting! I always thought that the Hebrew pronunciation was Lee-uh since that's how the Biblical scholars I know pronounce it when they talk about Leah and Rachel.

Interesting!

Actually, I've only heard it pronounced Lay-uh in regards to the Bible. Interesting.

Yep, in Hebrew they are pronounced LAY-uh and RUH-khel. (with the Hebrew "ch" sound, as in "chanukah").

Biblical scholars will still pronounce these names as Leah, Rachel, Joseph, Isaac, Abraham, Moses, etc. But Jewish Torah scholars will almost always refer to them by their Hebrew names (Leah, Rachel, Yosef, Yitzhak, Abraham, Moshe, etc.)

My Jewish doctor (who has been my doctor for like 15 years) calls me "Lay-uh", even though he knows my name is pronounced "Lee-uh"!
