What are some names from your heritage or family background that you particularly like? I am half German and my SO is fully German, although we were both born and raised in the US. We have been looking at some names that reflect our heritage lately... these are the German names I like:

Boys:
Dietrich (possible middle name for a future child)
Felix (am planning on using)
Friederich
Kasimir
Nikolaus (this would have been my name if I had been male)

Girls:
Amalie
Katja
Magdalene (my great-grandmother's name)

WDYT of these names, and what are some names from your own background that you like?

Katja is gorgeous. I love that name. I also love Magdalene and Amalie. All are very pretty.

I like Felix and Nikolaus.

I'm mainly Irish and German. I took a few years of German in High School and my name was Claudia (but pronounced Cloud-ia not Claw-dia... which I'm sure you already knew but I like that prounounciation better).

I've always loved the name Egan for a boy because it's my mom's maiden name and my sister's middle name. It's very Irish.

I'm mostly Italian. I like Lucian for a boy - a lot. I haven't thought too much about the female names.

I like Friedrich too.

My background is French and German, and while most of the first names I like aren't necessarily from those languages, some of the middle names that I intend to use *are*, because they're family names. So:

Franz (my grandfather)
Brigitte (German pronunciation - my grandmother)
Louis (my other grandfather)

I loved Felix and Magdalene! Maggie could be a cute nickname for it :)

I like Jestin (Welsh), my Grandfather's name.

I'm only about a 1/4 Irish, but I LOVE Irish names. Especially Maeve, Aoife (EE-fa), Aibhne (Ev-ny), Aislin (Ash-lin), Brighid (Breed), Caoimhe (kwee-vuh), Morrigan, Rory, Saoirse (SEER-sha) and Niamh (Nee-uhv) for girls. Cillian (Killian), Donovan, and Faolan. I'd don't think I'd use any but Rory or Maeve though.

I like Felix and Magdalene.

If I had been a boy, my name would be Seamus because my dad really likes the Irish part of our family, and I like the name myself.

Dietrich and Katja are both really nice. :)

My background is mostly Irish, and I do really like Irish names. I tend to favor the Anglicized versions of names, if only for ease of pronunciation. Anyway! Favorites:

Deirdre (typo!)
Eileen
Fiona
Sorcha
Siobhan

Aidan
Conall
Gearoid
Orrin
Seamus

My ethnic background is mostly English, so not much in the way of unusual names there. Sigh.

All three of your girls' names are lovely. Katja might face some annoyances in the spelling-and-pronunciation department, though, especially as a kid. From the boys' choices, the only one I really like is Nikolaus. I guess I'm just not a fan of the German "sound" when it comes to boy names. They sound fine on German boys, spoken with German accents, but they don't Anglicize very well. Just my opinion, though.

I've always loved the name Cordelia, and then my fiance told me that his great-grandmother's name was Cordelia!

My grandmother's name is Vivian Lorraine, and I love both of those names, and I like together too.

My mom's middle name is Simone, which I like too. (This is a great question; I never thought about the names in my family that I love!)

I also like my dad's name, Charles. Actually, I think his name has a good ring: Charles Henry B__., Jr. But I'm hesitant to give my children that name because my fiance's last name is Brown...it would make a great joke, but I don't want to make my kids the butt of a joke their whole lives. (Same reason my mom avoided the name Daniel, which she loved.)

From your family, I like all the names, really. My favorite for the boys are Nikolaus, Felix, and Kasimir, and all of the girl's names are really pretty.

ETA: AS for my ethic background...I'm African American. I like some African names, but most names that are African American in origin I do not like. I also have some Irish in my background and I absolutely love Irish names.

I love Deirdre (I like the Anglicization Deidre, too) and Siobhan, and Aidan and Seamus.

One of my college friends' family is mostly Irish and she has a little nephew named Eoin Jarlath, and I love that name. I'm trying to remember her niece's name; it's traditional Irish and very pretty, too.

ETA: Finola. That was it.

I love Irish names, especially the ones that don't look like they're spelled. I love Aislin and Saoirse!

My herritage, as far as I am aware, is English, French and Welsh. Although I am not into names that sound/are french, and I don't know any good welsh names that are not excessively welsh if that makes sense - because it's ancestry not recent, and my family already yell at me for "taking the welsh thing too far" when we found out our history.

But anyway, I really like some of our family names..

William is my Dad's middle name. I don't like my dad's first name as a name in it's own right, but I like William.
George just randomly pops up in my Mum's family a few times and I would like to use it. But my cousin has a first name George, so that's a no-no for family Christmases and such.
So I really like the William George (nn Will) combination.

My Dad's dad though, was called Frank Joel, and it is in my thoughts to pinch that completely.

Same goes for my Mum's mum, also now deceased... Lorna Lavina. What a lovely name! Although don't know if I will pinch it or not.

And Elizabeth pops up a few times on both sides, and I love that. But, it's my middle name too so is that allowed? Or is it egotistical?
And I really like Katherine... but my first name is Katie, and my Mum's middle name is Catherine, so again, is that too much?

And, I really like Kimberley, which is also the name of one of my cousins, so, I'm so far liking Kimberley Grace, to be known as Gracie, at least during infancy and childhood.

Aggghhh!!! But then it means I'd have Will & Grace!! And I TOTALLY didn't spot that til just now!! Oh crap, I'm going to have to think this over again!

Altho, if there are other children in between, it probably won't matter will it?

Haha, even though liking Aidan nowadays is something of a taboo, I can't help it. It's such a great name. :)

Eoin and Finola are wonderful. I went and peeked at their meanings on behindthename.com, and was blown over by the original spellings:
FIONNGHUALA
IARFHLAITH

Jeez!
