[identity profile] chippyjem.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hello, I am new. I've been married for almost 4 months now and I am trying to convince my husband that we should start a family soon. Lol.

You all seem to be honest, so I ask you this...

I've always loved the name Toby for a son, and I was wondering, if I spelt it Tobe, would that be awful?
Thanks!

Oh and my name is Krystal Anne (I've never liked my name)and my husband is Jacob Nathan (I think he has a wonderful name!)

I love your name and your husband's.

When I think of Toby/Tobe, I think of the dog Toby I know, and Tobey McGuire. It's all right.

I like the spelling Tobe.

Haha, me too. My next door neighbor's dog is named Toby. He's adorable:

If I were to read 'Tobe' without knowing you wanted it to sound like 'Toby', I would think it was to be pronounced 'Towb' with no 'be' sound on the end.

I was thinking the same thing. If you don't mind the mispronunciation, then go for it.

She's not the one who has to deal with the mispronuncation tho'.

Yes, I think it would be awful :(

It looks like To be or Töb. I would definitely advise against legally naming him Tobe.

I think it'd a bad variation.

I read it as "Towb" too. I say just go with Toby, it's a cute spelling, and actually makes sense.

i like the name toby a lot, its great. tobe makes me think it was pronounced "to be" (as in, or not to be)

tobias is another option, i mean, the extended version?

I like the name Toby, but I think Tobe would be pronounced phonetically rather than how it's supposed to.

(I had a cat named Tobey!)

Yes.. yes it would be awful. Toby is great, Tobias with the nn Toby is good too.
Toby is not a popular name.. it doesn't need a kree8tyve spelling to make it 'different.'

My brother's cat is named Toby. Toby is a good nickname for Tobias or something. :)

and for those creative spellings:
Towbee/Towbi
Toebee/Toebi

Just kidding on the creative spellings :D

i really dislike the name Toby to begin with (it's a kid's name, but i just can't imagine a full-grown man with the name Toby.)

However, the spelling of Tobe is just plain wrong in terms of phonetics. and people would be very correct to "mispronounce" it.

Well, it is Kobe, not Koby.

But I think Toby is better, and I especially like it as a nn for Tobias.

Tobe sounds like a nickename for Toby.

I actually like Tobe, but not if it was supposed to be said Toby. I like it Towb.

I like your husband's name too. :) I think it should be spelled Toby, personally.

I think it'd be awful... either way... but Tobe is worse.
Toby is too much of an animals name... I'm sorry.

I'm not crazy about the name Toby, but I prefer it spelled Toby than Tobe.

tobe would definitely be called...tobe..rather than toby. i say stick with toby or tobi or tobie.

It would look like 'Towb' to me. And when I think of the name Toby, I think of Toby McGuire so I don't really like it.

I think Toby would be a good name for a boy... but I agree with everyone, if you spelled it Tobe, i'd pronounce it like "tohb" and would struggle to get it right. It's like naming a child Kate and insisting that it is pronounced like Katie (I know that's not the best example)... it would be too hard for most people to manage.

I'm seeing it as toe-BE rather than TOE-be.

Yes, people would pronounce it Tobe, not Toby.

Spell it Toby & you've got a winner, it's adorable :-)
