Dec. 21st, 2008 04:32 pmOk I'm in pre-labour, it's crunch time on the baby name front.
This is out list - please vote, or comment with scathing reviews! The more scathing you are, the more I'd appreciate alternatives suggested just to prove your superior taste! =D

The list comes from a variety of sources...I'm honestly considering just calling the baby 'Baby' forever. It's all too hard! ;P

Date: 2008-12-21 05:51 am (UTC)I love:
Galileo
Lyric
Faolan
Phoenix
Kipling
Don't like:
Huck - reminds me too much of Huckleberry Finn.
Casper - Casper. the ghost.
Hyde
Tripp - I can't help but think of a stereotypical goth or gangsta kid here.
Romulus - at least you aren't having twins and considering Remus as well?
Ziggy - sounds VERY much better suited for a nickname and doesn't sound in the least bit serious. And plus, it reminds me of LazyTown.

Date: 2008-12-21 05:56 am (UTC)Most of the names have come from 3am searches or discussions - scouring the web. For reference my other sons are Orlando & Fox.
As ever - any suggestions gladly considered! & Thanks for the opinions it's really nice having feedback.

Date: 2008-12-21 07:27 am (UTC)I was told by history snobs that even they weren't sure how to say 'Faolan' but with our accent, sadly it sounds like "fay-o-lin" as in, 'I'm failin' maths' - it might need parents with a better accent.
The history of the name is pretty cool too...
Saint Fillan, Filan, Phillan, Fáelán (Old Irish) or Faolan (modern Gaelic) is the name of (probably) two Scottish saints, of Irish origin. The career of a historic individual lies behind at least one of these 'saints' (fl. 8th century), but much of the tradition surrounding 'Fillan' seems to be of a purely legendary character.
St Fillan was credited with powers such as the healing of the sick and also possessed a luminous glow from his left arm which he used to study and write by in the darkness.[2]
As late as the 19th century, the mentally ill were flung into St Fillan's Pool, bound and left overnight tied to the runied chapel's font and if the bonds were loosened by morning it was taken as a sign that the cure had been successful.[2]
I love the glowing arm, hilarious.

Date: 2008-12-21 08:38 am (UTC)For me Tripp (so many reasons this just irks me to death, tripping/high/drugs, tripping someone down like a prank, Tripp from the virgin suicides, etc.) I can't take it seriously as a name. Ditto for Lyric. And ditto times a million for Ziggy. (Rolling papers anyone?)
But I liked Huck, and Casper is ok. Hyde is my favorite on your list--geographical, yes, but literary and short enough to be hip. Like it. Maybe...Thoby/Tobey/Tobias, Felix, Roan, Cormac, Silas, Jasper, Guy, Gideon or Gus fit your style?

Date: 2008-12-21 12:30 pm (UTC)I'm not old enough to be an out of touch hippy ;)
I wonder how much the country we come from influences our experience of the name. I think a lot of these names are more american - and I'm australian so they have a different association for me. Ie - Ziggy papers?
I do like Jasper though. Sadly so does every 3rd parent with a son at the moment, which doesn't really matter but hard when I've lost MINE whilst out shopping! =D
Still like Cormac and really love Gus.

Mordecai
Rufus
Ansel
Solomon

Date: 2008-12-21 03:50 pm (UTC)Galileo -- As a middle name, sure, but only one person can pull off this name, and he's been dead awhile.
Hyde -- Where's Dr. Jekyll? C'mon, at least give your kid the good personality!
Lyric -- This sounds like a (female) Mary Sue in a fourteen-year-old girl's bad fanfic.
Tripp -- Drug trips, tripping and falling over
Kipling -- "Look how ~literary and pretentious we are!"
Romulus -- And Remus? No. =P
Ziggy -- Um, this is a comic strip character.
Huck (if it's a nickname for Henry or something, but keep in mind that it rhymes with 'fuck'), Casper and Phoenix might work, and I do kind of like Casper despite the friendly ghost associations, so that would be my pick, I think.
Suggestions based on the names from your list that I liked:
Leo
Shane
Felix
Lucian
Linus
August
River
Jasper
Cyrus
Caspian
Cash
Jude
Asa
Julian
Orin
Ezra
Congrats and good luck picking a name! Let us know what you choose!

Date: 2008-12-21 09:35 pm (UTC)Huck really does rhyme with fuck, it's pretty much all it sounds like when other kids say it which isn't great.
I love love Jude.
