A girl in my nursing class is named Honey. I was a little ehh about it at first, but she's this cute little asian girl (from Vietnam, I believe), and the name kind of fits.

Well, I found out a few weeks ago that her full first name is Honey-Chile, Chile said like child without the D.

She's about thirty.

WDYT?

I work in a nursing home. I find that a lot of the CNAs have weird names, too, never mind the nurses.

Like Sha-Shana (prn: Shaw-shaw-na), for example.

I don't know if it's the same for vietnamese people, but there are several Chinese people where I work, and they all picked names that are easier on the American tounge when they came over here.
If she picked it for herself- I think it's pretty obnoxious and immature. Makes me think she's intentionally going for the "cutesey-Asian-forever 5 years old, but still sexy" thing that a some Asian women seem to be drawn to.

If that's her actual given name, it's not really that bad.

I'm sorry, but I find this an incredibly offensive statement. You're automatically making assumptions about this person you've never even met. Furthermore, your "strategic" use of "some Asian women.." doesn't excuse the statement you made. The "cutesy-Asian-forever-blahblahblah" is something that the media has portrayed and if anything, asianphiles and the porn industry exacerbate that, so don't make an ass out of yourself.

Dammit, I meant, I find this to be an incredibly offensive statement...

the media wouldn't protray it if it didn't exist. People don't whip stereotypes out of thin air. Some asian women are into that cutesy thing just like some nerdy white guys are into the furry thing. I think you're reading WAY more into the word "some" than I intended. I intentionally chose that word so as not to imply that all or most or even a plurality of asian women fell into this subgroup.

Where is your outrage at the OP calling this woman "cute little asian girl... about 30 [year's old]"? I probrably wouldn't have even mentioned or thought of anything along those lines if that information was not in the original post.

Lol then why didn't you say "some women" instead of "some Asian women"?

Sorry for the late comment, but I should NOT have looked at this thread. -_- The way the OP says "cute little Asian girl" is obnoxious too, but your comment definitely rubbed me the wrong way.

And why couldn't the OP have said "there's this girl in my class..." instead of "there's this ASIAN girl in my class..."

I don't claim to not be obnoxious and rude in my comments in this community, but you're the one reading a negative connotation into an adjective.

And the fact of the matter is, whenever I run accross and adult woman with a Hello Kitty fetish- either in the media or in real life- there's a 99.9% chance that she's Asian. YMMV, but that's been my personal experience.

I don't know, I'm not talking about or TO the OP.

That's funny, I wonder why -- OH RIGHT, HELLO KITTY IS ORIGINALLY ASIAN :D
Also, it's not only Asians (http://goldcoaster.wordpress.com/2008/11/18/pokemon-master-a-world-record/) are into cute things -- it's a stereotype that all women are into cute shit, so why are Asians singled out?

and why are you singling me out for being obnoxious when you've said yourself I'm not the only one that's made obnoxious comments?

If you're going to pick apart my words, I can do the same. I wasn't aware of that woman, I wasn't talking about Pokemon, and I can't even tell what cultural group the woman in that picture is from, anyway.

I think you're just trying to start shit and find an excuse to be pissed off. I can understand that, but I don't feel like playing- I have work to do today. Maybe some other time you can try to convince me of how secretly racist I am. Merry Christmas!

You were originally saying that "[...] she's intentionally going for the 'cutesey-Asian-forever 5 years old, but still sexy' thing that a some Asian women seem to be drawn to" -- you weren't narrowing it down to Hello Kitty...? Not that that matters, anyway.

Yay for backpedaling though! GOOD JOB <3

"Cute little Asian girl" is condescending. If anyone called me that (not that they would) I would probably think about punching them in the face.

Honey is not the worst first name in the world. It's like Lavender at best or Precious at worst. Better for a pet, but not the most ridiculous thing in the world.

Honey-Chile, however... may just well be the worst. Especially because I want to pronounce Chile like the country: Chee-lay.

God awful. Honey is halfway okay, but Honey-Chile? Like what a southern grandma might say? Helllllll no. At least the honey part is spelled right though. I knew a girl in high school named Honee.

I have a book Understanding Asian Names (it was written for academic staff dealing with overseas students, and very fascinating it is), and it's a simple fact that many Asian cultures simply don't take names and naming as seriously as Western ones (look at some of those from the Philippines).

This one, surface pretty, has pretty dire connotations...

Coming from a Filipino family myself, I have to agree. We think of some stupid ass names. The person I mentioned below is Filipina, as well. :{

I know sb named Honey. I never liked her name, honestly, but it suited her. She's in her 20s now.

Honey-Chile, however, is an atrocity.

had to giggle at this cause
