[identity profile] mizsfrankie.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I'm starting to a write a story, problem is, I can't come up with a name for the main charactor.

The story is set in the early 90's so around 1992-1993.
The main Charactor is an 18 year old singer, she is Italian-Irish, born is New Jersey but raised in Boston for most of her life.
I picture her dark haired, light eyed and light skinned.

I like names that are not to common, not to to girly either, I'll take any and all suggestions though.
For some reason I've been thinking about "Valentina" I like it, but I'm not stoked about it.

Thanks for the help!

Valentina just seems a bit much for me. What about Valerie? Val could be a nice nickname that isn't too girly.

i think the only reason i don't like it is because i know someone with the name so i automatically think of her.

Veronica? That's a nice Italian name. I don't like Valeria. There's a few more but they've already come up.

When you say Italian-Irish are you meaning her parents are actually from Italy and Ireland respectively or are you going with the more liberal definition of I have one relative about six generations back that came from Italy so I'm totally Italian ... Because I'm not sure but I think an actual Italian might have a little trouble pronouncing Siobhan, I could be wrong. My Italian friends are all at work or still asleep. If one parent is actually Italian you might want to avoid any TH sounds. It doesn't really occur in Italian and I know the Italians I know tend to have trouble with it.

You could use this to see what was popular in the US at the time http://www.galbithink.org/names/us200.htm
And it's character not charactor btw.

Siobhan is completely foreign to an italian.

First name that came to mind: Alana. It's a Gaelic name, but I could also definitely see it on an Italian person...so that seems to fit her. She could also have the nicknames Al/Ally, which is less girly.

Also...Christina? Chris is also a 'less girly' nickname option.

Valentina has no Irish in it.

I suggest Bridget or Brigitta (Bree-GEE-ttah) in italian.

If Valentina is standing out in your mind, then the next one that comes to me is Veronica. I think it has a feel similar to Valentina, but can also be shortened to Ron/Ronnie or Nick/Nicki (choose your spelling) to give it a less girly edge
