So, what does everyone think of the name Lola? I've become quite smitten with it recently. My only reservations regarding it are that, first of all, it feels like it should be a nickname. I checked around online, and I've found that it's commonly used as a nickname for Dolores, which I really, really am not fond of. Secondly, it is very much a Spanish name, and I am very much not Hispanic. Would that seem "weird" or "off" to you guys?
And, just as a standard disclaimer - I am not pregnant, nor do I plan on having children any time soon. I just love names. A lot.

Hmm it should be fine, people are more open to using names from other cultures. It may sound a bit odd for a blond blue-eyed girl, but a brunette [of any ethnicity] could carry it off.
*Lila, Lily, Lisa, Lucy etc

Date: 2006-04-25 05:38 pm (UTC)Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar
Across a crowded floor, they worked from 8 till 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?
At the Copa, Copacabana
The hottest spot north of Havana
At the Copa, Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....they fell in love
His name was Rico, he wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancin' there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far, Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who?
At the Copa , Copacabana
The hottest spot north of Havana
At the Copa, Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....she lost her love
(Copa. . Copacabana)
(Copa Copacabana) (Copacabana, ahh ahh ahh ahh)
(Ahh ahh ahh ahh Copa Copacabana)
(Talking Havana have a banana)
(Music and passion...always the fash--shun)
Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind!
At the Copa, Copacabana
The hottest spot north of Havana
At the Copa, Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa....don't fall in love
Don't fall in love
Copacabana
Copacabana
Hahaha. But yeah, that's what Lola makes me think of.

Date: 2006-04-25 06:13 pm (UTC)It sounds like a completely reasonable name to me, apart from the songs, but if you are unsure about it, you could look around for a name you love which could have Lola as a nickname, like others suggested, and if you just can't find anything you like enough to use, go with Lola on its own.

Date: 2006-04-25 06:22 pm (UTC)if you want to use it as a nickname, have you considered naming the child something like: louisa lauren, something that would easily nick down to lola? just a thought.
