(no subject)

What do you think of the name Bishounen (bee-SHOW-nen) for a boy?
Its Japanese slang that literally translates into "beautiful boy". Would it be too weird to give a white, American boy a Japanese name?
Its strange but I really really love this and the nickname I would use would be Bish (beesh).

i don't really like it at all... :o/

i think it's too out there, in my opinion

the first thing i thought of was bichon frise (http://www.cz-pes.cz/bichon-frise/imag/blondy2.jpg). sorry.

that name isn't my style at all...but as for giving a white american boy a japanese name-i see no problem with it...in fact, if i have another girl, she'll be "Kaida" which is a japanese name, but we are white americans LOL we do LIVE in japan for the moment though!

Kaida is really cute :)

Yeah, that's too weird.

If it wasn't quite so long and out there, I might like it. For instance, if it was shortened to "Shounen"

I think it's gross.
Especially "Bish" blegh

Depends. Do you care that he will be forever mocked by anyone who's ever watched anime and/or read manga and/or knows Japanese? If not, then go for it.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no...no. Slang should not be used as a name no matter the language. Plus, it pretty much screams ANIME NERD.

And bishounen usually refers to effiminate teenage boys...which I don't think should really be imposed on someone...

Right on, man. Don't saddle your kid with that.

[identity profile] blitzgirl.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
It almost always refers to effeminate teenage boys. I like the sound of it, but the kid would get teased a bunch.

Yeah, I was in an anime club in college and the term Bishounen (or bishie) was used to denote a really, really girly guy, often one who closely resembled a girl. While it isn't a derogatory term (as far as I know), I would steer clear of it as a name. He might not want to be known as a girly boy if people find out how the term is used.

Even the hardest core anime nerds probably wouldn't use it for a name.

You know, Beautiful Boy is a fantastic song by John Lennon...;)

[identity profile] morphinae.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say I think it is extreme, which sucks because it's kind of a double standard. I would have to advise against using slang as a name, no matter what the language. There's too much room for error...some people in Japan may thing it's beautiful boy, where others may have a less flattering opinion on what exactly it means.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Can't say i like it at all, but that may be because ive never heard it before...
What about Beau (bo)? it's french for Handsome which is basically the same meaning, i think its adorable.. since you'd be using a one syllable nickname it's kind of similar..

yes

[identity profile] sotypical42483.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like. And Beesh sounds like bitch to me.

[identity profile] secret-x-stars.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm not into anime, but Bishounen is a word that's kind of leaked into all sorts of fandoms... and pretty much, i've read too much slash fiction to think anything else but 'GAY TEENAGE BOYS MACKING' when i see it.

although it's not so much that association that would keep me, personally, away from using it... but i'm not even sure people in Japan would use a slang term like that to name a child.

[identity profile] trissyd.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I thought of a "Bichon Frise" too... amazing dog, HIDEOUS for a name... sorry.
