Ughhhhh. My fiancee's best friend's daughter is having her baby soon...
We just found out that she's having a boy, and when we asked her what the name would be she gave us two choices:


Alonzo Luis   or     Eduardo Alonzo.

I don't see a problem with those names. I mean, I'm assuming she's hispanic and thus the names are culturally suitable. I think they sound fine together too.

I understand your ughness because she's not hispanic, but I really find it unnecessarily judgmental to criticize people for choosing names that don't fit what is basically stereotyped names. I don't think white people should only be allowed to use 'white' names, nor black people 'black' names, and so on. I think as long as the name isn't too hard to spell, or pronounce, and wont cause gender confusion, then what's the big deal. If the parents are caring, loving and rear their child accordingly, then big deal what name they go with. There's more serious things in life the child will face and have to deal with, then anything associated with their name.

While I recognize the ethnic/cultural origin of certain names, and thus might think a person would match a specific 'ethnic' name, I don't expect it as though it should be, and I don't think those of a different ethnicity/culture should be frowned upon, for using names that certain high minded people want to think should be reserved just for those of that specific ethnicity/culture. Because bottom line, we're all just people and names are just what we use to address each other by, they're not who we are, and who we are, is way more important, then what we're addressed as.

My ugghhh was totally not intended because the mother is not hispanic. My ughh is because I hate the names completely regardless. As does everyone who will be involved in the childs life besides the mother. It's fine, its her child. But I hate Alonzo, and I hate Eduardo.

That all people don't agree on all things, is a good thing. Personal opinions don't always equate right/wrong.

You and other people may think those names are ugly, but that doesn't mean they are.
Alonzo is the Spanish/Italian version of the German name Alphonse, and Eduardo is the Spanish/Italian version of the English name Edward. I really believe the fact that she isn't Hispanic, nor Italian is very much playing into the up turned noses at her choice in names, because if you were all of either culture, her name choices would seem completely normal and ACCEPTABLE, and more than likely NOT ugly.

I stand by the fact that it is unnecessarily highly judgmental to look down on a name either because it's different, or because certain people feel it doesn't 'fit' in with the parent's race/culture, and I think for a child to be exposed to overly judgmental people, is uglier than any 'ugly' name.
Alonzo and Eduardo may not seem to you and the others as nice acceptable names, but at least they're not something completely stupid like some of the names that have been posted to this community. Like the latest, Howl. =/

I understand that's why some people don't like those names, but I wouldnt care if I were hispanic. I would never like those names. Just as I will never like the name Michael. There are some names that just don't sound pleasing to you, and those are two of them for me.


I mean, I've already realized if the hispanic thing were a problem for me, I could call him Al or Ed... etc... That's just not the case.

Aw, I love Alonzo. I have a non-hispanic friend who named her kid Sylvia, another non-hispanic friend whose sister's name is Maria, a non-indian friend named Prem, and have a non-hispanic co-worker whose name is also Maria. I'm sure I know more, but can't think of them. Conversely, I know a lot of people from all backgrounds who name their kids "white" names, so why not go the other way around? Also, boy names ending in -o are tres sophisticated, and definitely worlds better than the -aiden phenomenon.
That being said, I like Alonzo Luis better than Eduardo Alonzo.

I agree too honey. And even if you don't (which I think you kinda might), I think it is a little odd to give a child a name with is really not culturally accurate. And I don't think it's judgemental or racist or anything of the sort.
like I said earlier, it's the same as giving a white (or really a black or hispanic child) child a very Asian sounding name, people would probobly raise an eyebrow.
