[identity profile] trivher.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I was talking to my husband and mentioned that a lot of my favorite names contained the letter i and wanted to know if that would work as a low-key, almost like a secret theme, in naming our future children. I don't mind themes, or sibling names bing connected but I prefer it (the connection) being difficult for others to pick up on. Anyways.... He must have misheard me because he started listing names that started with I that he likes. Ivan and Icarus mainly. He than asked my thoughts on both. I like Ivan yet afraid the Ivan The Horrible connection. On Icarus I told him I didn't like it, in which I got the sad face from him and him asking really? I than asked him to say it with our last name, he did, and just stared at me asking so? At this point I had to start laughing while asking him if he really didn't notice any problem with Icarus Hicks!? Sadly he didn't. Saying it was a slant rhyme made it acceptable to use, while a name like Mick Hicks would not work.

[Poll #1276237]

I might as well ask this as well .... What are your thoughts on the names containing the letter i? Some I like include: Gideon, Astrid, Elaine, Julian. Do you think people would notice something like that? Or would most people not pick up on it?

So... he wants to name his son after a mythological kid who died because he didn't listen to his father...?

My thoughts exactly.

And Icarus Hicks is definitely too singsongy, I think!

Icarus is yuck.

I don't think anyone would see anything at all with the i's, it's just a letter. And I think those 4 work together.

I don't think anybody would notice that (I don't see it as hugely theme-y, honestly; like someone above me said, it's just a letter). For me, Icarus is the name of Gohan's dinosaur in DBZ as well as the mythological figure, so that is a world of no.

I don't mind Ivan, but it seems very Russian to me; it would seem a little odd if you didn't have ties to that heritage in some way.

My favorite I-names for boys are Isaac and Isaiah.

I can see the appeal of Icarus in the abstract, for real life peoplre it seems too much with the association and that it's a bit cumbersome to say/spell.

Icarus Hicks has a certain Dickensian charm, but I wouldn't really recommend it. After all most guys get their names shortened; so there's Icky/Ick/Icks Hicks to consider.

I don't hate Icarus (gave it a 4/10), but with his last name it does sound ridiculous (1/10).

I don't think the names you like are obviously connected. And I like them all, with the exception of Elaine (Seinfeld ruined it for me).

I LOVE Icarus!
It is my number 1 guilty pleasure name but I wouldn't use it, as much as I would love to!
