Oct. 9th, 2008 08:44 pmI work with a guy named Cortney..I always assumed it was spelled Courtney but the other day I was writing his name down and he told me there's no u. When I asked why he said 'because I'm not a girl.'
So..does leaving out the 'u' make it any more masculine? Is Cortney one of those names like Ashley or Stacy that was originally a boy's name?
I also think it's kind of funny that the newest employee in Cortney's department is an older guy named Claire. Did that one used to be a male name too?
By the way..I love that Cortney is named Cortney..I'm a fan of girl names on boys. lol
Edit: I forgot about this one. I took a resume from a teenage girl today..and her name was Johnette. =/

Date: 2008-10-10 02:09 am (UTC)I actually think Cortney almost looks more feminine. I think trying to make a name that used to be a guy's name but is now used more on girls more masculine by spelling it differently really doesn't work.

I don't think Cortney without the u makes it any less feminine, I mean it's not like if that was your name and you were a boy you would introduce yourself by saying "Hi, I'm Cortney without a u".
So unless it's in writing, what difference would it make!

Date: 2008-10-10 05:10 am (UTC)And to me, even if when a name originated, it was predominantly used on boys, if it sounds feminine, I just don't think it works on a boy, and Courtney/Cortney, just sounds girly.
I think parents need to stop expecting one gender so much that when that gender isn't what is born, they think they can satisfy themselves by giving the name of the gender they wanted. It's just ridiculous naming boys Cortney, Stacy, Claire, etc, and naming girls Michael, Oscar, Jack, etc.
Unisex names aren't any better in my book!

Date: 2008-10-10 02:01 pm (UTC)It's funny how these names can switch genders suddenly. I feel bad for my nephew Addison who was named wayyy before Greys Anatomy which seemed to make Addison a girls name. I think it also became associated with girls b/c parents wanted an alternative to the over-used Madison.
This is why I stick with traditional names. ;)

Date: 2008-10-14 06:24 pm (UTC)I think Courtney is fine for a boy. I don't like it at all for a girl. I prefer the "ou" spelling but whatever. As I've said, my dad's middle name is Lynn. I also like Dana for a boy and see nothing wrong with calling a Connor "Connie" or a Judah "Judy" every once in a while. I even like Jocelyn. That being said, although I like the idea, I'm not sure I like any of the names enough to actually use myself. Well, I'm kind of in love with Jocelyn but that's one of the few that I'm good with on girls too, and I can totally see the negative repercussions of going to school as a boy Jocelyn.
