I work with a guy named Cortney..I always assumed it was spelled Courtney but the other day I was writing his name down and he told me there's no u. When I asked why he said 'because I'm not a girl.'

So..does leaving out the 'u' make it any more masculine? Is Cortney one of those names like Ashley or Stacy that was originally a boy's name?

I also think it's kind of funny that the newest employee in Cortney's department is an older guy named Claire. Did that one used to be a male name too?

By the way..I love that Cortney is named Cortney..I'm a fan of girl names on boys. lol

Edit: I forgot about this one. I took a resume from a teenage girl today..and her name was Johnette. =/

I work with a guy named Lynn. It was my first time seeing that name on a man.

I work with one, as well. People from outside the company are always calling and asking for Ms. [last name].

I also have an uncle named Lynn--Lynn Earl, actually. They always call him that, never just Lynn. Worse and worse--his son is named after him.

My dad's middle name is Lynn, which is his dad's middle name. I love it. :)

The first Clare I ever knew was a guy, but he spells it differently.

I actually think Cortney almost looks more feminine. I think trying to make a name that used to be a guy's name but is now used more on girls more masculine by spelling it differently really doesn't work.

Claire on a boy!?

Nymbler tried to tell me that my name could be used on a boy but I didn't want to believe it!

I don't think Cortney without the u makes it any less feminine, I mean it's not like if that was your name and you were a boy you would introduce yourself by saying "Hi, I'm Cortney without a u".

So unless it's in writing, what difference would it make!

Cortney looks like someone couldn't spell Courtney. It doesn't make it look more or less masculine. I've never been able to see it as a boys name but my sister is Courtney so when I think about it, I think about her (I hate the name on either sex).

I knew a guy whose middle name was Claire (it may have been Clair - can't remember) his first name was David.

To me, names that have an 'eee' sound at the end, for the most part, sound feminine to me, that's why I wont go with a name like that for a boy.
And to me, even if when a name originated, it was predominantly used on boys, if it sounds feminine, I just don't think it works on a boy, and Courtney/Cortney, just sounds girly.

I think parents need to stop expecting one gender so much that when that gender isn't what is born, they think they can satisfy themselves by giving the name of the gender they wanted. It's just ridiculous naming boys Cortney, Stacy, Claire, etc, and naming girls Michael, Oscar, Jack, etc.
Unisex names aren't any better in my book!

Along the same lines as Johnette...I knew a girl named Donalla. She was the oldest of 3 kids. The dad was so set on passing on his name (Donald) that the first child (her) got a version and then the second child, a boy, was also named Donald. Blah...

One of the worst (most disrespectful, most disturbed) children I ever had in class was a boy named Courtney- can't handle the name now
not a fan of boy's with feminine names although I think it's cute when girl's have masculine names (Michael, Charlie, Frankie)

Courtney, Stacy, Claire, Kelly, Leslie, etc....no matter how you spell it, its for girls. My oldest son is named Adrian but I've always thought of that as a boys name, and Adrienne as a girls, although I think its more popular for boys either way.

My second son is named Dylan and we've even met a little girl since he was born also named Dylan. I don't like boys names on girls at all, I think girls should have feminine names.

Courtney, Ashley, Stacy, etc. are all very old family/last names, mostly from the Norman French. That's why you get so many in the South, a fair number of boys are still given mom or grandma's maiden name as a first name, and a lot of people around here are Anglo-whatever.

Glad my Southern family doesn't follow that rule. We'd have a bunch of kids named Crowder or Lovelace running around.

Cut to me, vomiting a little in my mouth.

I'm a female Courtney and I knew a male Courtney who went by Corey.
It's funny how these names can switch genders suddenly. I feel bad for my nephew Addison who was named wayyy before Greys Anatomy which seemed to make Addison a girls name. I think it also became associated with girls b/c parents wanted an alternative to the over-used Madison.

This is why I stick with traditional names. ;)

My husband's and my best friend is a guy named Courtney. He strongly prefers to be called Court though.
His brother is named D'Arcy which I think is also a name that's getting more unisex nowadays.

I love "girl" names on guys. Of course, I only like the ones that were originally meant to be used for boys.

I think Courtney is fine for a boy. I don't like it at all for a girl. I prefer the "ou" spelling but whatever. As I've said, my dad's middle name is Lynn. I also like Dana for a boy and see nothing wrong with calling a Connor "Connie" or a Judah "Judy" every once in a while. I even like Jocelyn. That being said, although I like the idea, I'm not sure I like any of the names enough to actually use myself. Well, I'm kind of in love with Jocelyn but that's one of the few that I'm good with on girls too, and I can totally see the negative repercussions of going to school as a boy Jocelyn.
