Sep. 30th, 2008 01:46 pmwhat do you guys think of caitlin?
i'm 19 so i've known A LOT of caitlins and i never liked it much, but i like that it's an irish form of catherine/katherine, which is easily my favorite name for girls. my boyfriend is not a fan of katherine, he feels like it sounds too old for a baby, but i think i could get him to agree on caitlin, and we're both at least partly irish (i'm over 50% irish), so i'm not worried about that.
my only qualm is, to you, does it sound too much like a little kid? i love the nickname cate so i'd probably call her by that, but the name still seems so new. like i've never met anyone more than a few years older than me named caitlin, and although it has a classic appeal that i like because of catherine, i'm still worried that it's trendy and easily dated.

Date: 2008-09-30 06:06 pm (UTC)i'm not planning to have children for at least another six or seven years, so i guess we'll see the status of caitlin then. thanks for your opinion though, i'm always concerned about that because my name is ashley and i've always felt like i'd outgrow it, so i wouldn't want my kid to feel that way.

Date: 2008-09-30 06:14 pm (UTC)It's funny, I'm living in The Netherlands (and have lived here all my life) and I was born in the 80s, but my parents considered Caitlin for me, too. They had no idea it was trendy back then! Maybe that's one of the reasons why I like it.
Anyway...maybe I'm not much help because Caitlin is uncommon here...but I like it.

Date: 2008-09-30 06:28 pm (UTC)I also like that you're spelling it Caitlin and not Katelynn/Kaitlyn etc.

Date: 2008-09-30 06:36 pm (UTC)There's always Caitrin or Catriona if you want an Irish form of Catherine that's less popular.

Date: 2008-09-30 08:23 pm (UTC)Katie! Kate! Kat! Kitty! And that's just the obvious ones off the top of my head.
I don't mind Caitlin (that's really the only spelling I like, so kudos to you), and I adore Kate/Cate, but as a Katherine who goes by Katie, I much prefer the latter. It ages very well, especially with a good nickname for when they're really little. I love my name. (I'm Irish, too, mn is McLaurin)

Date: 2008-09-30 11:41 pm (UTC)I've grown with my name. I was Kaity before I had control over it, then Kaitlyn all through grade school, and I shortened it to Kait for high school and college, because it suited me better.
I don't believe it's dated/trendy. It's been a pretty popular name from the late 80s until currently, which is over 20 years that it's held on.

Date: 2008-10-01 01:43 am (UTC)like i'd be bothered by the popularity if i was naming my kid madison or something but caitlin is different somehow, and i think that's how a lot of people felt recently when emily and hannah and abigail were really popular too.
