Is my taste terrible? :(

These are my favorite names. My name list seems to be pretty negative.
http://www.babynames.com/namelist/9515034

Girls:
Allegra Sage
Catriona Jocelyn
Evette Veronica (nn Evie)
Wilhelmina Celeste

Boys:
Bryan Alexander
Garrison Culver (nn Gary)
Jacob Gabriel (nn Jake)
Lucas Brendan (nn Luke)

I will definitely use Catriona Jocelyn for my first girl. I really like Catriona spelled this way. Whenever I mention this to people they're always like "Why don't you spell it the normal way?" I wouldn't call Katrina the "normal" way, it's just one way of spelling it. I like that Catriona is different. It is also the title character in one of my favorite books so that makes it extra nice for me. I know I'm going to have to correct people all the time but I don't care - they'll get used to it. Jocelyn would be the middle name in honor of my Aunt Joyce. I think Catriona Jocelyn flows well and the name together means "Pure Joy" so I really like that.

Evette Veronica would be in honor of my grandmother (her middle name was Veronica). And I love the nicknames I am using - Evie, Gary, Jake, and Luke. Overall, I know my boys names are more traditional than my girls names, but I really like them. I don't think they're boring and I think all of them flow nice too.

As far as the negative feedback goes, I'm hoping that these names are just not people's style as opposed to people thinking that they are absolutely horrible. LOL At any rate, at least they're all real names. ;)

The only ones I really don't like are Bryan and Garrison. Bryan just seems really dated and bleh, and I'll never get the name Garrison... it's a place where soldiers are stationed. It just seems to fall into the Cannon/Gage/Archer/Gunnar/Blade category.

Also, Catriona is the more traditional form of Katrina, so just tell them that you are spelling it right. :P

Are you pronouncing Catriona as ka-TREE-na or ca-tree-OH-na?

[identity profile] shechoselove.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why not spell it as such?

[identity profile] shechoselove.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, never mind... I reread this post. To each her own :)

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
i think although your taste in names is quite different from mine, theres nothing wrong with your names. its not like theyre completely made up, or even kree8yv, names.

the only ones i really dislike are allegra and bryan.

the only names on your list that are also on mine are gabriel and lucas/luke.

i think evette veronica (evie) is adorable. and i like wilhelmina celeste too, mostly because i love the nickname willie.

i think garrison is nice, but i dont like gary. its too middle aged man for me.

"my boys names are more traditional than my girls names?
lol why is that? Not criticizing, just curious. I've noticed sometimes people will name one kid the most off the wall name and the other one will be Sarah or something haha...I'm just curious why you like more traditional names with the boy names?

Also, while I wouldn't use it, I really like Evette Veronica.

[identity profile] invisiblepet.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I like your boys names.

[identity profile] aquilinum.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the second time recently somebody here has made a post about how they'd like people to reconsider their negative responses. Fair enough, but realize that you're not going to be able to have this conversation with the tens of thousands of people your child meets through the course of his or her life, and if the INITIAL reception is primarily negative, that's something to consider.

Also, I think Catriona Jocelyn is made worse by the fact that the most famous person ever to use the "Jocelyn" spelling is... well, see for yourself (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=jocelyn&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2). Sure, both Catriona and Jocelyn are established spellings, but both are a step away from standard with their own separate hitches.

I dislike Garrison, despite my love of Garrison Keillor.

Still, I like all of your names more than anything truly ridiculous like Peyton or Braelyn — or Kaylyn or Kaedee or what have you.

[identity profile] aquilinum.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It has, although the spelling associated with Joyce was traditionally "Joscelyn". Without the S, it's not generally considered a variant of Joyce but instead a surname-turned-male-first-turned-female-first-name.

Whatever float your boat, though! Like I said, I don't actively dislike your name selections that much.

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even know who that is... I've never heard of or seen that person. Maybe I'm really dense, or something.

[identity profile] aquilinum.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Jocelyn Wildenstein is famous for being a freakishly, intentionally disfigured plastic surgery addict — not for any particular achievements. It's probably a good sign that you don't know who she is.

[identity profile] mairelys.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was ca-tree-OH-na the whole time until you answered that question in the comments.
To me that's like naming someone Helena and spelling it Helenia and expecting people to pronounce it Helena... but like [livejournal.com profile] aquilinum said, whatever floats your boat!

I don't particualrly care for your girls' names but I like all your boys names except for Garrison.

[identity profile] lovetokate.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I like:
Jocelyn
Evette (like that one a lot, actually!)
Celeste
Alexander
Jacob
Lucas
Brendan

What is the normal way of spelling Catriona? Is it supposed to be Katrina? I read it as "Cat-troh-eeah"

[identity profile] lovetokate.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahah...I actually didn't even make the Evette/Yvette connection. I actually REALLY dislike the spelling of Yvette (though I know that is a commonly used spelling.)

[identity profile] limelight-lude.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a Catriona and I almost mispronounced her name the first time I saw her because she calls herself Triona. I love it now. I dig Catriona Jocelyn.
I really liked Allegra Sage, Bryan Alexander, and Garrison Culver.

[identity profile] 0o-faerie.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not horrible. Well, maybe except for Evette Veronica...sorry! I've never liked Yvette/Evette, because to me, it just sounds like 'eeeh, fat!' (Weird, I know).

Lucas Brendan and Allegra Sage are really nice. I also like Catriona better that way, but I'm afraid it will be mispronounced all the time! Are you going to put an accent on the 'i' or not?

[identity profile] elemmennope.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
A touch eccentric but they are all serviceable names. I approve.

[identity profile] mokey4.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
These wouldn't be my choices, but I don't think they are yuck. Except Allegra, because it reminds me of allergy medication.

[identity profile] lilacmermaid.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Allegra Sage, Catriona Jocelyn, Bryan Alexander and Jacob Gabriel.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I read "Ca-tree-oh-nuh," not "Ka-tree-nuh," and I think most people will, too. I don't mind Catriona with the former pronunciation, but you shouldn't name a child "Isabella" and expect people to pronounce it "Isabelle," IMO. If you're okay with the fact that almost no one will ever pronounce this correctly -- and also realize that you being okay with it doesn't necessarily translate to your child being okay with it, as you're not the one who's going to have to deal with it -- then I say have at it.

As for Garrison: Mr. Garrison. =P Wilhelmina and Bryan are too dated for my tastes, and Sage and Allegra are a little out there for me. The rest I don't mind.

[identity profile] biancasablancas.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like the Isabella/Isabelle thing, ca-tree-na *is* the legit pronounciation.

[identity profile] searlait.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see how Catriona is Katrina. But that's just me.

[identity profile] laminy.livejournal.com 2008-09-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't even tell that Catriona was supposed to be Katrina. I think it's probably that O that's throwing people off, because I read it ca-tree-oh-nah. No, your taste isn't awful. The boys names are all nice, except for Gary. I just don't like that name.

With the girls, I'm guessing that it's just that the names aren't peoples tastes. Particularly the first names. The middle names, I like all of them. The first names, I don't like any of them.

[identity profile] lavandersparkle.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't my taste, but they aren't terrible. But if I saw Catriona myself I would of pronounced it ca-TREE-oh-na. The names I at least don't mind are Gabriel and Lucas. The others are just not my style. I really dislike though is Allegra, and Culver. Dx But that's just one person's opinion. :)

[identity profile] perfectcherry.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Jocelyn actually means "little Goth" or "of the Gauts," as in the Goths and Visi-Goths.

[identity profile] idrinkacidrain.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
tl;dr but I love the girls names and like Lucas and Gabriel.
