Is my taste terrible? :(
Sep. 16th, 2008 12:21 pmThese are my favorite names. My name list seems to be pretty negative.

Girls:
Allegra Sage
Catriona Jocelyn
Evette Veronica (nn Evie)
Wilhelmina Celeste
Boys:
Bryan Alexander
Garrison Culver (nn Gary)
Jacob Gabriel (nn Jake)
Lucas Brendan (nn Luke)
I will definitely use Catriona Jocelyn for my first girl. I really like Catriona spelled this way. Whenever I mention this to people they're always like "Why don't you spell it the normal way?" I wouldn't call Katrina the "normal" way, it's just one way of spelling it. I like that Catriona is different. It is also the title character in one of my favorite books so that makes it extra nice for me. I know I'm going to have to correct people all the time but I don't care - they'll get used to it. Jocelyn would be the middle name in honor of my Aunt Joyce. I think Catriona Jocelyn flows well and the name together means "Pure Joy" so I really like that.
Evette Veronica would be in honor of my grandmother (her middle name was Veronica). And I love the nicknames I am using - Evie, Gary, Jake, and Luke. Overall, I know my boys names are more traditional than my girls names, but I really like them. I don't think they're boring and I think all of them flow nice too.
As far as the negative feedback goes, I'm hoping that these names are just not people's style as opposed to people thinking that they are absolutely horrible. LOL At any rate, at least they're all real names. ;)

Date: 2008-09-16 04:36 pm (UTC)the only ones i really dislike are allegra and bryan.

i think evette veronica (evie) is adorable. and i like wilhelmina celeste too, mostly because i love the nickname willie.
i think garrison is nice, but i dont like gary. its too middle aged man for me.

Date: 2008-09-16 04:45 pm (UTC)I never thought that about Gary. I guess it does remind me of Gary Oldman, but it also reminds me of Gary the Snail so who knows? :D
I love Evette Veronica and Wilhelmina Celeste so I'm glad you like those. Thanks for your thoughts!

Date: 2008-09-16 04:42 pm (UTC)lol why is that? Not criticizing, just curious. I've noticed sometimes people will name one kid the most off the wall name and the other one will be Sarah or something haha...I'm just curious why you like more traditional names with the boy names?
Also, while I wouldn't use it, I really like Evette Veronica.

Date: 2008-09-16 04:51 pm (UTC)I'm not sure why I like more traditional names for boys. I guess it's just my taste. I have no idea. :)

Date: 2008-09-16 04:49 pm (UTC)Also, I think Catriona Jocelyn is made worse by the fact that the most famous person ever to use the "Jocelyn" spelling is... well, see for yourself (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=jocelyn&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2). Sure, both Catriona and Jocelyn are established spellings, but both are a step away from standard with their own separate hitches.
I dislike Garrison, despite my love of Garrison Keillor.
Still, I like all of your names more than anything truly ridiculous like Peyton or Braelyn — or Kaylyn or Kaedee or what have you.

Date: 2008-09-16 04:59 pm (UTC)Anyway, I'm not asking people to reconsider. I was just wondering if people thought they were the most horrible names they ever saw, or if they're just not to their individual taste.
Thank you for commenting!

Date: 2008-09-16 05:26 pm (UTC)To me that's like naming someone Helena and spelling it Helenia and expecting people to pronounce it Helena... but like
I don't particualrly care for your girls' names but I like all your boys names except for Garrison.

Evette (like that one a lot, actually!)
Celeste
Alexander
Jacob
Lucas
Brendan
What is the normal way of spelling Catriona? Is it supposed to be Katrina? I read it as "Cat-troh-eeah"

Date: 2008-09-16 05:54 pm (UTC)Thanks for telling me which names you like best. I thought someone might say that it's supposed to be Yvette, but I like Evette better and that way I can use the nickname Evie.

Date: 2008-09-16 06:36 pm (UTC)Lucas Brendan and Allegra Sage are really nice. I also like Catriona better that way, but I'm afraid it will be mispronounced all the time! Are you going to put an accent on the 'i' or not?

Date: 2008-09-16 09:07 pm (UTC)As for Garrison: Mr. Garrison. =P Wilhelmina and Bryan are too dated for my tastes, and Sage and Allegra are a little out there for me. The rest I don't mind.

Date: 2008-09-16 11:20 pm (UTC)With the girls, I'm guessing that it's just that the names aren't peoples tastes. Particularly the first names. The middle names, I like all of them. The first names, I don't like any of them.
