If you're having a question about a pronunciation, I'd be happy to answer it.
Also...we don't really have a nickname system here. People are called what they're called, nothing is shortened. That's why some names are really short...and more than one middle name is common practice here, too! (I've said it before...but I'll just say it again for the ones who don't know).

Isn't that a coincidence haha.
My mom had a sister who died of t.b. when she was about 13, and her name was "Lise-lotta". To me, I thought maybe it was an European form of Elizabeth, now I'm not so sure. Is there an English trans. for Lotta? Does it mean Laura or something?
How do you pron. the following names?
Thieme
Lodewijk
Neeltje
Ido
Jitske
Stijn
Lieve

Date: 2008-09-13 10:31 pm (UTC)As for Lotte/Lotta, I think it's a form of Charlotte. I know Carlotta = Charlotte, and I knew sb called Lottie(sp?) which was short for Charlotte, so I think it's a good guess!

Date: 2008-09-14 07:45 am (UTC)Lodewijk: LOW-deh-wike (this is tricky; English doesn't know the 'ij' sound...but it's close to the English 'i'!)
Neeltje: NAIL-cheh (super Dutch)
Ido: EE-doe
Jitske: Yits-que (again, super Dutch!)
Stijn: Stine
Lieve: LEE-veh (it's Dutch for 'dear')
As for Lotte/Lotta, I don't think there is a translation. It's pretty common here and in Scandinavian countries. I believe it's derived from Charlotte, though.

Date: 2008-09-15 12:02 am (UTC)I never would have thought Lotte/Lotta was a form of Charlotte. I wonder if the same holds true for Lise-lotte? Or if they're two different names. =7

Date: 2008-09-15 02:22 pm (UTC)I think (but I'm not sure) Lise-Lotte is actually just a combined name (Lise and Lotte, with Lise deriving from Elisabeth and Lotte from Charlotte). We're pretty fond of combined names here, and in Scandinavia they're even fonder of it =P.
