My husband and I are officially trying to get pregnant. That being said... I've finally been able to coax him to talk about names that he likes now that there is a reason. :P

He thought of, for a boy, Andy Andrew C***. It is his paternal grandfathers name. Both Andy, Andrew, and the combination of the two are traditional in his family. Hubbys middle name is Andrew and his brothers first name is Andy, additionally.

We like the name of his maternal grandmother (she passed when he was around three) so, although not along the lines of our usual tastes, it holds great signifigance and meaning. That would be Grace. The only real conflict is that our niece is also named Grace.

My mother-in-law will probably flip if we don't name him or her something semi-normal so I guess I have to keep that in mind. :P

Um. Andy and Andrew are the same name. =P That's like naming a child Chris Christopher. I love Andrew, but not enough to use it twice. "Tradition" doesn't mean this doesn't sound like a joke.

I hate Grace for religious reasons (or lack thereof), but it's not terrible if that doesn't bother you.

Andy Andrew is pretty horrible. I love the name Andrew, and the nickname Andy FOR Andrew, but both in one name is a bit much.

Andy Andrew is incredibly bizarre. There's no reason to name your child essentially the same name twice. It's like Lars Larson (who I adore making fun of every chance someone reminds me of him).

I did an newscast with Lars Larson. I started laughing when I had to say his name...

I'd break the tradition.

I hope Andy Andrew is a very odd combo - it is the same name.

Andrew is a very nice name, but if so many family members have the same name, you might want to consider it for a middle. The kid's go to have his own identity, you know?

Ideas:

Andrew Daniel
Andrew Gregory
Andrew Douglas
Andrew Erik
Andrew Archer
Andrew Levi

Henry Andrew
William Andrew
Colin Andrew
Harvey Andrew
Jacob Andrew
Micheal Andrew
Joseph Andrew
Christopher Andrew
John Andrew

Grace also makes a nice middle if it is already taken by a cousin:
Elizabeth Grace
Elena Grace
Claire Grace
Caroline Grace
Melissa Grace
Daphne Grace
Laura Grace
Catherine Grace
Jennifer Grace
Michelle Grace
Hannah Grace

Good luck!

Maybe suggest you do what you MIL did for her sons and give one "Andy" and the other "Andrew" (but not both as first names)... The two together are just a little too much I think!

As a side note, I adore the name Andrea. I'm not sure if it's what you're after, but I think Andrea Grace would be beautiful for a girl.

I just wanted to add you might also like to just use the initials A. A. C_____ . I know a family who have a tradition to name sons with the same initials, funnily enough they are A. A. lol Some of their names are:

Austin Andrew (baby)
Andrew Alexander
Alistair Aaron
Allan Acheson
Archer Abraham (baby)
Alexander (Alex)
Angus
Ashley
Adam
Amin

Same as what everyone else said-naming him the same name twice is just bizarre, whether it's a family thing or not. Just use Andy or Andrew once.
And um, it's your baby, so name it what you want and don't worry about your MIL.

Well, Andrew is Biblical, too, JSYK...

Seriously, though, just name him Andrew and call him Andy (I much prefer Drew as a nn, but yeah). If you're aware of the problems here, I can't figure out why you haven't immediately shot this down. I didn't say it was a joke, just that it will sound like one (and Andy, despite "tradition," is an okay nn and a terrible standalone name, IMO; I know a poor child whose given name is "Meggie," who will, like your kid if you name him Andy, be forever cursed with sounding like an eight-year-old).

Yeah, I actually don't mind Biblical names, but that one in particular for some reason really gets my goat. I think it's because I know so many Bible Belt women-should-be-submissive families who name their daughters this, and now it has a connotation of we-hope-this-girl-will-be-quiet-and-meek-and-serve-her-husband to me. That plus the fact that it sounds like a "filler" middle name doesn't make it attractive at all.

Having chosen names for my kids that my MIL and mom dislike I can easily say it's only a problem initially. They get used to the names and then it's a non issue. It helps if the name has a nickname that they don't hate as much:P

My mom HATED the names and first and my MIL thought they were weird. I basically told them my kid, I get to choose the names. If you want to name a baby have another kid.

The whole naming him twice, basically, is weird... tradition or not lol. Plus, I wonder how many people/schools/government forms will think you made a typo and put his nickname then full name, you know?

You could always still use Andy or Andrew (I'd say the latter, because then you could always call him by either name). OR you could always do the same initials AAC. All that said, I do really like the name Andrew.

Andrew Alexander
Andrew Ash
Ash Andrew
Andrew Alistair
Aaron Andrew
Andrew Adam
Andrew Alton

some other combos, including Andrew:
Andrew William
Andrew Elijah
Sean Andrew
Andrew Ryan
Andrew Jonathan
