Heard the name of a gal that used to work at my company today:

Anastasia. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Only, it's pronounced ah-nah-stah-SEE-yah

For why with the random pronunciation? Does anyone else pronounce Anastasia like that? It seems so pretentious to me. Like telling people my name is Jessica, only it's pronounced jees-ICE-ay. Also like the Rave pronounced Rahv. Totally unnecessary and confusing.

That's actually the typical hispanic pronunciation of the name. It's not *that* far fetched unless she's Asian or something...

I've never heard the I as the stressed syllable, even in hispanic pronounciations. always the third a. ah-na-STAH-see-ya. Not ah-na-sta-SEE-yah. Like a girl I knew, Alessandria, but pronounced it like Alice-andrea

oh i see what you're saying now! I think my brain refused to accept ah-na-sta-SEE-yah, and automatically made me pronounce it ah-na-STAH-see-ya.

Yes, I agree- it's ridiculous.

I remember there was a Simpsons episode where Marge joined this group of like, slightly aristocratic women, you know, rich mens' wives who just sit around and act all important because they have money. And I remember they all had normal names but pronounced really ridiculously, like Roberta was robert-ah, eliza-beth, sue-sin (susan). There were a few other names but those are the only ones I remember. So yeah, pretentious

Well, truth be told, it is like that in some parts of the world.
Not sure where, though.

it doesn't bother me, as it's still phonetic.

Ah-nah-STAH-see-yah is a common pronunciation in Europe and legit. If it's really accented on the fourth syllable, that would be strange.

If I'm nto mistaken, and I could be, that is the Russian typical/historical pronunciation... I'll be honest in saying that is how I pronounce it and how a few Russian Adoption families I deal with say it... but then again I could be missunderstanding the pronunciation from reading it...

Yeah, I dated a guy who was from Russia, and that was how his mother pronounced her name.

Ah-nuh-stay-CEE-ah? I've heard it before. I like saying it like that because I like the way it comes out of my mouth. But I never pronounce it like that around other people.

It's real that way, with the accent on the 'sta.' I knew a Russian girl who used that pronunciation.

I work with a woman who pronounces it that way. She's Russian. It's legitimate.

No problem :) I've come across names and think "really?" but then find out that it's legit, it's just from a culture I'm not familiar with, or haven't come across yet.

I've heard Ah-na-sta-zee-ah a lot. It doesn't seem that out-of-the-ordinary to me.

I don't think it's a random pronunciation, I think that it may be the actual pronunciation. I was watching a television show with Russian characters and that is how they pronounced it.

That's the Russian pronunciation, yeah. I know several people who pronounce it that way.

I thought that was the 'real' pronounciation.
