I'm gonna start writing a story about vampires soon, and I was wondering: what names are appropriate for a male vampire and a female vampire?  Any help is appreciated.

PS.  Try not to use names from Twilight (i.e. Edward, Bella, Rosalie, etc.).. Thanks!

PPS. Any kind of name is welcome, no matter how "out there." :-)

Which mythos are you taking the vampires from, and where are these particular vampires originally from?

Agreed!

To me Victoria says vampire. (Or John Mayer. ;)) But it depends on WHEN and WHERE you know?

Next question is how old they are, and if they'd have Gaelic or otherwise Celtic rather than Anglican names.

I make up names for most of my characters too, though yours are quite unique :)

I also love your suggestions of Elizabeth, Reagan, Lexi, Genvieve, Lucia, Lillian/Lilliana, Ophelia, Violet, Amelie, Raven, and Livia for this genre.

Here's to hoping that your characters aren't the cardboard cutouts that SMeyer's are!

I don't know what kind of name you're looking for, but I can offer up some naming advice. First, there is only one thing SMeyer has done right with her characters, and that is give them names within the proper social context. The characters, vamps and humans and shiftshaping wolves alike, all have names that depict correctly when they were born. Alice, Edward, Emmett, Jasper, and Esme all have early 20th-century names, which is great since that is when they were born. Second, SMeyer fails when it comes to naming is that her immortal vamps never change their names, which makes the fact that their true identities as immortals haven't been revealed pretty amazing, since it's easy to track a person when they carry the same name everywhere and all of the time. Remember: is it wise for your immortal characters to not change names every so often? In the show New Amsterdam, the main character has a new alias every ten years.

Good luck with your writing!

Victorian and Greek names are usually best on vampires, btw. :)

Well many factors need to be thought about when considering appropriatness. For example, when does the story take place. And how do the vampires live? If, like in Twilight, they are walking around within the last 100 years then you need to take that into consideration. 1,000 years would place different names being popular at the time. If they are newborn vampires then any popular names currently will do.

As said previously, it would depend a lot on where they were from originally...

Here are a few sets:

Old Victorianish: Wilfred and Margaret

Upper class, Pre-Victorian, European: Gratian and Amedea

Eastern European/Russian: Liviu and Viorica (Russian for bluebell)

Old Welsh/Celtic: Aneirin and Anwen

Armenian: Jirair and Vartouhi

Arabic: Zaman and Rasha

Indian (sob-continent): Ajit and Vena, Kiran and Trishna

Medevial French/English: Guicard and Rohesia

Ironic Late Roman: Gerontius (old man) and Constantia (constant, obviously)
