My coworker is godfather to a girl named Abimbula. It's a Nigerian name, but her parents are both English to the bone. They just liked the name.
She's apparently 15, nearly 16, has a normal social life free of any significant teasing, does NOT go by a nickname...
Dude.
I'm all for the cross-cultural name thing, but not even I can stomach Abimbula.

I do though question the no nickname. I would think some people must call her something short. Like Abi(Abby)maybe.

Date: 2008-08-28 11:14 pm (UTC)Well, fear not, o! assumer! I too like unusual names. Just not ones that sound like the have the English word "Bimbo" in them (the name is pronounced ah-BIM-uh-lah, at least by this girl and her godfather).
And I'm pretty willing to bet that if those very close to her vouch that she doesn't go by nicknames, well... she probably doesn't go by nicknames. Remember that many Elizabeths don't use nicknames, and it's the same number of syllables.
