Personal Name Taste
Aug. 27th, 2008 06:55 pmSo.. I find my personal name taste seems to change drastically.
I find myself thinking that even if I have names set in stone, when I finally HAVE children they will most likely change because I doubt my kids will look anything like I picture the children of the names I like looking like.
It seems more than likely that despite picking names ahead of time, that quite a few people probably are stumped when they're handed a baby that looks nothing like little Jacob Xavier Thomas Cruise, or whatever.
That aside, right now my name taste is..

For boys, I'm still really stuck on Sirius Arthur. Possibly other variations that include either Sirius and/or Arthur, but I would really love to honor my grandfather and my father with Arthur as a middle name. I couldn't use it as a first name, it's a little too old-fashioned for my first-name tastes.
For a girl I really have no idea. I honestly love Remi Christine, but I think that, being as my girlfriend is blonde and will most likely be the biological parent (So far I'm carrying the baby, she's providing the egg. She's blonde and brown eyed, so baby will either be blonde, or if dad is not blonde.. whatever dad is?), I don't see Remi as a little blonde girl.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:20 am (UTC)I think Remi Christine is very nice and would be just fine on a girl with blonde hair. Not that it matters, but that's actually what I was picturing.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:24 am (UTC)As for Remi, I like the name. But I really just don't see it as a blonde-haired little girl. Maybe a blonde boy. But I mean, that's just a personal preference, and that's the thing.
-I- don't see that name fitting a little blonde girl at all. But you do. Lol. But yeah, it is a very nice name. Maybe I'll just pick out a dark-haired sperm donor and hope for the best, lol.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:32 am (UTC)Remi Christine is not my style, but I still find it pretty. I actually can see a little blond haired girl when I think of this name.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:34 am (UTC)Arthur is for my grandfather who passed away when I was almost 6. I was his favorite, and I wish I could remember him better. =/
I actually see Remi as a dark-haired little girl, but I guess we'll see when I pop the kids out, lol.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:32 am (UTC)As for Remi Christine, well, Remi doesn't seem like a "full" name to me, just like a nickname. But I think it would fit a blonde girl really well. But it all matters what you and your girlfriend think, and if you really can't see it, then I would suggest going with something else.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:37 am (UTC)When I think Sirius, I think stars. *shrug* I guess I'm the only person left in the world that DOESN'T think immediately of HP, though. My girlfriend likes it because when we have a son and he says 'I"M SERIOUS!' she can go 'I KNOW, I NAMED YOU!' .. But she's kinda obnoxious like that, haha. In any event, we both actually agree on that name.
Remi is a full name, but traditionally a boy's name, haha. I suppose I could always hyphenate it, Remi-Christine? .. Lol. But I kinda like that it's short and choppy, but still two syllables long.
I just don't know if I see it as a brown-eyed, blonde-haired girl. But that's probably because I'm picturing MY genetics, and genetically my kids will most likely have dark hair. It's a shame I won't be using my own eggs, but our children will be better off in the long run.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:50 am (UTC)I might rethink Sirius Arthur... I actually like the name, but... I don't know, I feel like it's just too much. Your little anecdote above made me think of a joke my 8th grade teacher used to make... when someone would say to him "Are you serious?" he'd say "Dogstar." It was so cute.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:53 am (UTC)Yeah, I'm not a HP nerd so I never really thought of the Arthur thing, and someone else brought it up.. But honestly, that name has to stay. It's non-negotiable, I WILL use that name for my first son, and it will be his middle name, lol.
That's funny, haha. But yeah, that's why she likes the name. That and the HP character.. God I am NOT looking forward to waiting in line to see that movie. @_@

Date: 2008-08-28 02:56 am (UTC)'I'M SERIOUS!'
'We know, we named you!'
We both have that sort of cruel sense of humor, though. I mean, not cruel enough to name my kid something HORRENDOUS, but cruel enough to name a boy Sirius, which sounds exactly like serious. Hah.

Date: 2008-08-28 03:14 am (UTC)And as for the name thing? It's a joke. We both liked the name, and hey, what do you know, it happens to have something amusing that comes along with it.
Most children at least before they learn what their own sense of humor is, share their parents sense of humor. They laugh when you laugh, etc.
Regardless of how politically correct you were trying to be, you went about it in a bad way. I'm gay, not unconventional. I still want a wedding with a dress and my father walking me down an aisle. I just don't happen to be physically stimulated by men, or bound by the standards society has set forth of who we are allowed to love. That doesn't make my 'situation' unconventional. Sorry.

As for the name itself, Sirius is not bad, although (and I know you've heard this over and over again), most people will immediately think of Harry Potter. He also might get a bit of grief over the Sirius/Serious thing, but I'm not sure it would be that crazy. My name is Alison, and every once in a while I would get people saying, "Alison Wonderland, lolol" but it never really bothered me. Maybe Sirius as the middle name would be more convenient for him, though.
I love Arthur, too.

Date: 2008-08-28 07:05 pm (UTC)Sirius is actually a fairly common name over in European countries. I guess that makes sense, seeing as JK is.. like.. brittish or whatever the fuck.
My mother's name is Allison. My name is Alicia. I used to get teased about my last name.
I definitely wouldn't trade it in for a middle name. It's very important to me that Arthur be my little boy's middle name, what for my grandfather and all. I mean, most people want to name their kids after their family, and use it as a first name. But I don't really like Arthur as a first name. However, I do believe it flows wonderfully with Sirius. And my girlfriend has to have SOME say in the name stuff. ;)

Date: 2008-08-29 09:21 pm (UTC)My comment was simply suggesting that you might consider choosing a less ‘cruel’ name, one that isn’t an obvious pun and haha joke, to decrease the existing potential for bullying. That’s it.
It was not, as you seem to have interpreted it, a critique of your sexuality, your adherence to nuptial tradition, or of the child-rearing skills of homosexuals, etc.

Date: 2008-08-29 10:31 pm (UTC)Sirius is a common name in europe, it is not strange or cruel in any manner and wasn't picked to be such. However we see it for the possible laughs it will have when our child is old enough to appreciate a sense of humor. It will be frustrating but then again a parent's job is to frustrate their child. Part of life is dealing with that feeling, and personally I'd rather teach it to my children rather than have them go through life without knowing it.
Our child also won't have three parents. I do not intend to have a man present in our relationship. Therefore your point on unconventional environments is moot.

Date: 2008-08-28 04:02 am (UTC)The only Remi I know (except she spells it Remy) is dark haired. I can't really see it on a blonde either.

Which was what we used to call our 6th grade teacher.
Sirius & Remi
Date: 2008-08-28 07:11 am (UTC)Congratulations to you and your girlfriend. (Although I'm confused that you say she will most likely be the biological parent when she is providing the egg-- you mean that that's the plan and it hasn't happened yet?)
Re: Sirius & Remi
Date: 2008-08-28 07:17 am (UTC)Biologically it'll be her child, but I'm going to carry it inside me? Does that make more sense? Lol.

Date: 2008-08-28 07:45 am (UTC)I'm not very fond of Remi, but I like it paired with Christine.
As for babies who don't look like their name (if that makes sense)...I think babies don't look like anyone, because they change so much every day =).
Anyway...way to go you & your gf! =)

Date: 2008-08-28 07:06 pm (UTC)It'd be like (for me) naming my blonde-haired little girl Remi. Does not compute.
I'm sure I will end up changing names fifteen million times once we're pregnant. xD
